When I first saw that added to the Wiki, the first thing that came to mind was to complete the segmentation of my Networks so Vera cannot see/expose anything.

I think the best practice is to use SSH Port forwards ... one well protected access into your LAN for multiple purposes.
You could even use the SSH server on the Vera for this ... I happen to use a linux box ...
What MCV provides is the ability to be ignorant about Firewall and router port forwarding. 

My phone does an SSH login when I am not on the LAN and initializes port forwarding for all of my remote connections ... I then access my home devices via local ports on my phone that are securely forwarded.

I still have a connection to a MCV server ... but only to get the nightly backup.

Couldn't agree more... key/password combo for me and all ports are forwarded on my phone so all apps are secure.

Does that mean you simply remove the Vera from your account on cp.mios.com?
In my few hours with the unit it seems to kill the tunnel once I do that.

Sounds freakin' dangerous - people then will claim MCV to be liable for damages

I setup port knocking for similar purpose. It can be any sequence of TCP and/or UDP hits, each sequence can open something specific on the network for the originating IP for predefined time. When somebody askes me how to do that I usually pack the instructions with "Do not try this at home" warning.
