Veralite VS Vera3 and USB Port
« on: June 16, 2013, 03:35:02 pm »
Hi All,

I currently have the Veralite.

Whats the difference between the Veralite and Vera3 other than the Vera3 having WiFi?

What is the USB port used for ?

Thanks
Jim

Vera Lite has about half the ram of the V3 and also only one Network port.

The USB port can be used either to plug external storage, or an RS232 to serial adapter for example. Many others have developed plugins that interface directly to other hardware too like the RFXtrx for instance.

Vera3 has twice as much memory ... so you can add more devices/plugins.

The USB port can be used to attach external interfaces.
Various plugins use these.

You can install a memory stick and Vera can use it as a disk for log files, freeing up some of it's precious memory. I highly recommend this!
A 500MB ot 1GB is fine. If will only use upto 500MB no matter what size you install, unless you know how to modify it yourself (Linux Wizard).

I have a Veralite and have connected a powered USB hub, this allows me to connect a USB key (to log past variables used for the DataMine Plugin) and the Current Cost ENViR energy monitor (Current Cost plugin) to show my Engergy Consumption.

Next is USB logging and an RS232 connection..

I was not sure why I would use USB at first, but now I'm so glad it's there..

Thanks for the info. I added the Flash Drive today for datamine. I'm still trying to figure this app out.

The Vera3 has WiFi built in don't it? I have a router so I went with Vera Lite to save some money. I'm not sure if I would use enough devices to need a Vera 3. I have 43 devices on the Devices Tab. and 10 apps so far. Actual hardware, I have 7 Devices. Thermostat, 2 Micro-SES, Lighting module, appliance module, Envisalink3 and Kwikset door lock.

Thanks Again
Jim
