UI7 - "cannot write user data" Error.
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:38:49 pm »
I am not sure why I am getting this message, from reading other posts, I think it might have to do with apps.

Would it make things easier if I enable USB Logs?

Not sure what memory is it that is causing this problem,

total         used         free       shared      buffers

You would have been getting this error in UI5 too, it's just hidden in the Luup log on UI5 and not displayed on the web UI.  It can appear when you are low on RAM.  A Luup restart is probably sufficient to fix it, for a time.  If it's a memory leak (some of us reckon it is) then you can make it happen less frequently by using fewer plugins, disabling some logging or moving the logs to an external disk.  But if it's a memory leak then it will, eventually, resurface.

I don't think I was low in RAM, I had more than 50% available.

Its been over a week since the message showed up, I am keeping an eye on the memory utilization to see if signs of a memory leak show up.

Why has this problem not been rooted by MCV if it dates back to Ui5 ??

It seems there is a core piece of architecture that is jacked up and nothing's being done to seriously fix it... like it's good enough to cycle luup process and archive logs.

Every Linux device could use "more memory" yet engineers can design stable systems - Imagine your Router or Voip box taking a dump under load to archive logs!! How is that for worldclass design...3rd world?

If heavy logging is wasting too much ressources: only log during active debug phase, not 24/7 by default.

So many loose ends but so many good things too!:D

I started getting this message after an update recently and had to disable writing the logs to a memory stick.

Are you saying that logging to external USB memory makes this problem worse with more frequent restarts ? so better log internaly?

I have been itching to plug in an external stick and crank up the debug level to get a better granularity on current issues....

If it works for you, writing logs to a USB memory stick is certainly a better option.

I was using UI6 when I first turned it on. I needed to debug a bunch of UI6 bugs and turned on verbose logging. No idea why I started having a problem recently under UI7 or if it's common. All I know is turning USB logging off fixed my "cannot write user data" error and corrected some instability.

You should knock on wood because I don't think the UserData bug and USB logging have a direct connection.
I used to get UserData issue and have never ventured in USB territories...

Hi,

I keep having this issue as well and it seems to happen when the available memory (as reported by SysMon) drops below about 40K.

Not been able to identify what is slowly eating up the memory, but it happened from the start with hardly anything installed so it seems to be a Vera internal issue if you ask me.

Cheers Rene

This happened again after an update a few weeks ago. I ended up disconnecting power and restarting. So far so good.
