1.7.1222 beta update for VeraEdge
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:01:53 am »
Hello,

This release is an upgrade bundle , consisting of OpenWRT upgrade to v.124 and MiOS firmware upgrade to 1.7.1222.

OpenWRT fixes/enhancements:

1. usb devices support through Serproxy
2. enabling client mode (station) for wifi
3. activate /storage partition and move some data to it (~64M of free space, jffs formatted)
4. dropping unneeded packages/modules from the base image and enabling them as optional packages (7zip, ipv6, etc)
5. adding optional packages to repository (nano, kernel modules)
6. increase default overlayfs space (writable free space)

How to set WiFi client mode (requires shell operations):

1. Enable loading the WiFi driver for station mode:
Add rt2860v2_sta  to  /etc/modules.d/50-rt2860v2

2. Disable wireless access point:
In /etc/config/wireless, under config wifi-device ra0  change  option disabled 0  to  option disabled 1

3. Load the station module:
modprobe rt2860v2_sta

4. Put this in /etc/config/wireless:
Code: [Select]
config wifi-device  ra1
option type ralink
option ht 0
# KEEP THIS LINE TO ENABLE WIFI:
option disabled 0
config wifi-iface
option device   ra1
option ifname   ra1
option zone     wan
option mode     sta
option wps      1
option ssid     YOURSSID
option encryption psk2
option wpa_crypto AES
option key      YOURPASSWORD
option network  wwan

5. Add this to /etc/config/network:
Code: [Select]
config interface wwan
option proto    dhcp

6. Enable WiFi client interface:
ifconfig ra1 up

7. Wait a bit and get list of existing wireless networks:
iwpriv ra1 get_site_survey

If you want to use the VeraEdge as a router:

    Set the following firewall rules:

    uci set firewall.@zone[1].forward=ACCEPT
    uci set firewall.@zone[1].masq=1
    uci commit

Set dhcp to provide IP's on the ethernet network:

Set < option dynamicdhcp '1' > under < config dhcp 'lan' > in /etc/config/dhcp (by default, it is set to 0)

In the end:

Reboot the Vera Edge or restart network with
    /etc/init.d/network restart

If it does not become accessible, you might need connecting
to it through 192.168.81.1, by ethernet, after setting your local ip to 192.168.81.123, for example.

!!!NOTE!!! : Downgrading to an earlier OpenWRT version after upgrade should not be done, this will brick your unit!!!

All the Best,
Bogdan.

Indeed the Openwrt version on Vera 3/lite is very outdated (10.03) and upgrading some packages (e.g. Openvpn) to a more recent version with better security would be very welcome

Broke my Edge. :) I think it's all about wi-fi (/etc/config/wireless shows both "ap" and "sta"). Edge restars after wi-fi led goes on. I have only several seconds to ssh, i tried to rewriting wireless config, but Vera automatically changes it every boot.
::)Tried to hard reset, wait 30 seconds till power and internet are blinking, others are solid for several hours, but no luck.
Old recovery method for Lite/3 doesn't work.
Any suggestions?

Hello Mobilniy,

You need to:
 Edit /etc/config/wireless:

search for:
    config wifi-device  ra0
and set:
            option disabled 1
save and close the file.

and then in the console just insert: wifi down

Hello Bogdan,
Thank you. I have only several seconds to copy modified wireless via WinSCP to /etc/config/wireless before Vera closes connection and restarts, so i can't use putty or so.
After that i set option disabled 1 and Vera restarts, it wouldn't revert settings to default (endless circle)? :-\

To revert wireless settings to default just remove /etc/config/wireless and reboot.
rm /etc/config/wireless

or overwrite it with an empty file (if scp is the only thing available)

Bogdan, i tried to delete it or overwrite with other settings, but it overwrites my changes by himself each boot.
I'll try with an empty file.

If you delete the file - it is ok to overwrite your changes - it will write default settings.
Is the unit still auto rebooting after deleting the file? This issue should be fixed then.

Unfortunately, Vera keeps rebooting and makes a "wireless" file with a both "ap" and "sta" :(
