VISTA-20P & VISTA Automation Module (VAM) - New Home Build
« on: June 30, 2015, 01:12:12 pm »
We are having a new home built and I want to automate the home, a co-worker introduced me to the Mi Casa Verde and I really liked what I see.  The house comes with the VISTA-20 Alarm system from Honeywell.  I found the VAM and spoke with the alarm installer about the module.  He didn't recommend it, wanted to push me toward getting a Control 4 system.  I'm not going there...  So my plan is to have them install the alarm system, then I will add VAM and add it to Mi Casa Verde or VeraLite, which I still need to purchase.  I found the installation files for integrating the VAM with the Vera system.  Just wanted to get some input on setting this up, functionality, likes, dislikes etc...  Any information would be useful.

Thanks

Ken

I don't have one of these, but if you head on over to the plugin subforum and search for "Vista" you'll see a ton of past discussions.

(The forum you posted in is about Internet security of the Vera, not home security systems.)

Edit: This subsubforum might be even more relevant.

I started with a Vista 20P and the evl3 (internet module).   I actually bought a VAM with the intention of replacing the EVL3 and adding Zwave.  However the VAM didn't work with the first thing I tried to pair a garage door opener.  I quickly found out this segment of technology (zwave) is still in the adoption phase and I would need to get something with a bit better support.

I got the VeraEdge and use the EVL3 plugin.  I will admit the EVL3 plugin was a pain in the butt to get setup but now it's setup it's doing pretty well.

I would stay clear of the VAM until Honeywell decided to become more serious about it and it's support.

I am runing a VAM as Primary with VeraLt as Secondary... I think it is a solid add-on to interface security scenes with Vera lights.

There are always limitations to any implementation but Honeywell has been rock solid for me... where Vera is very powerfull but often feels like walking an undocumented mine field of incompatibilities.

Running Vista 20p and Vera 3 for one year now. I tried the AD2USB first which was very limiting in distance and location in addition to a higher workload on Vera and then I switched to EVL-3 with Vera and it is running fine. I don't understand the issue around EVL-3 being painful but I had EVL-3 before with a DSC alarm system so my opinion might be clouded here.

Working now on enabling arming the alarm system via Amazon Echo via voice commands while disarming REQUIRES the PIN.

Have you figure this out? I get my Echo in a few days and also use a Vista 20p + EVL3.

thx

Yes, using Alexa and the bridge it starts a scene which arms the alarm system. Given that Alexa uses devices with ON and OFF, I did not use the OFF command. If anybody can disarm your alarm system without your PIN and just using ANY voice, you can as well kick out your alarm system then.
