What interesting things have you done with Sonos?
« on: December 15, 2015, 08:47:03 am »
The curse of having a little technical ability and virtually no creativity leaves me lacking for ideas when it comes down to actually putting the Sonos plugin to use... so I thought I'd start a thread to collect some interesting implementations for TTS. Here's what I've done so far:

  • "welcome home" announcement in a couple of languages
  • announce when gates, garage doors & entry doors are left open
  • simulate a conversation between two voices when the house is empty - although, I think this would be better accomplished with a soundtrack, maybe interrupted with TTS once in a while

So... what have you done?

Of course I have it give me the weather forecast when I am getting ready to go to work.

I'm also tinkering to get it to play MP3's off my WHS2011 server so I can 'talk' to my dogs if they misbehave. TTS would not work as it's not my voice and I can't put an inflection (stern command tone) into TTS.

Also set up Sonos to tell me if the smoke sensors go off and if I leave any doors unlocked after 10:30PM and when I receive a package (I have a deckbox near my front door with a door/window sensor for UPS/FedEx/USPS etc to put packages in. To protect them from the weather and 'porch pirates'.

What do you use as a trigger... does it just spout off at a certain time each day?

  • In the morning Sonos tells us the time, weather for the day, and reads what we have on our family google calendar
  • At 8:00 Sonos tells my boys that it's time for their showers and based on whether it's an even or odd day, which boy has to shower first. Also, it reminds them to brush their teeth. not that THAT reminder actually helps. In the same scene the stair and hall lights turn on to avoid any "but it's dark and I"m scared" excuses.

Those are the two things it currently does, since I had to re-start from scratch on my new vera edge. When I had everything on the vera lite it also:
  • Did a security check on the doors and garage to tell us if anything was open, and then gave the next day's weather and events on the calendar.
  • when my son got home from school it was reading the calendar from the school that posted my son's homework assignments so that he knew what he had to work on. again, not sure how effective that really was.

I'm slooowly working on getting the vera edge back to where my lite was before the upgrade disaster. Once I get all the devices working I'll put the security check scene back in. I think mom and dad nagging is the only thing that works for the homework, so I may not reinstate that one. We do display the homework calendar on our digital sign in the kitchen, mostly to remind US what homework to nag him about that night.

At this time it spouts it of at a preset time on those days I go to work. I may grab a Minimote next time they are on sale and use one of the buttons to trigger a weather forecast and the others for Sonos preset stations.

As I have large dogs, I can't use PIR sensors to track my movement and use that as a trigger.

And the dogs already know what the weather is, anyway.

As I don't have animals (yet), I may try that with my motion sensors.

They do indeed. Never colder than 69F or warmer than 78F and dry. As they are inside while I am at work. :) I've yet to find a PIR sensor that is supposed to be pet immune being able to distinguish between a human and a 70lbs dog.

About the only solution I can think of would be to have RFID readers in all doorways. ( as they are micro chipped) But that causes a whole new set of problems such as the signal strength, EM radiation of the RFID readers and connections to them.

I'm wondering if I can trigger the weather plugin via Amazon Echo once I get that one installed. Trying to find a location out of reach of a 65lb 1 year old 'pup' that loves to chew charging cords. I may have to hold off installation for a few months until I break her of that. The tally so far is 3 USB charging cords, 1 QI charger and the power cord to a nail grinder. As well as a few DVD's and magazines.

yes to both with the exception of yours truly. ;) I don't have to worry about the WAF, only the CAF.

A couple years ago I found a great set of grandfather clock chimes recordings (MP3 files) on the Internet.  This clever individual had placed a high quality microphone inside his grandfather clock cabinet for each of the 12 on-hour chimes.  One can clearly hear the mechanical gear click and start the music/chimes.  Most last about a minute.  I downloaded the 12 files and stored them on my Western Digital network drive.  With PLEG, I run the proper chime file at each hour on the hour, as an Alert in the Sonos app.  Whatever music might be playing at the time automatically stops at the top of the hour while the chime plays, then the music starts again without missing a beat.  The chimes only play between 8 AM and 10 PM, so do not wake us up at night.  Took my wife a couple days, but she likes it.

Another attempt to use Sonos to alert my better half did not go over well at all.  I had snipped the verse "I'm....getting......closer.....to.....my......home" from Grand Funk Railroad's classic Closer to Home, and played it over Sonos when I was out and returning to about a mile from the homestead.  She hated it so I had to remove it.  Can't win them all.   :)

WHOA! I like it. You... wouldn't be willing to share the source of your chime files, would you?

I am happy to share my PLEG setup.  Not comfortable passing along the MP3 files, because they're not mine, but I will spend some time looking for the source, and will pass along the link assuming I can find it.  Wish I had bookmarked it...     Stay tuned.
