Any idea if Microsoft will allow third party access to "Kinect" (formerly "Project Natal") functionality? http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/kinect-optimized-xbox-360-dashboard-preview/

Initially, I wasn't too excited about another motion controller but, during the E3 Microsoft presentation yesterday, they demoed the voice control of the XBox, and I have to say that I was pretty impressed. It evidentially is also able to automatically recognize a human and pair them with their gamer tag. (Which in my mind would be a pretty advanced form of user authentication/detection)

Imagine if there was a way to access Kinect's voice command for controlling Vera!

Any idea on Microsoft allowing third party access to it peripherals?

I think the hardware that accompanies Kinect will also be available as a PC HID. There were some posts also on Engadget or Gizmodo about it from a company called primesense. However I doubt the underlying software to make it work will be made open, and I think you'll only ever see it work in windows. If it does you can bet your bottom Dollar on it working in MCE. If we get an MCE plugin to control Vera then we have support :)

This would be a good team with the MCE plugin if either was ever to materialize.

+1 for a Media Center/Extender plug in.  I'd like to make the move from mControl to Vera, and that would push me to make the change.

I'd also be willing to pay for the app (Preferably with a trial).

found this:
http://www.milliesoft.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=69&Itemid=21
haven't tried it yet
I'm in the middle of this & it isn't going well.  I've installed the PowerController MCE and the Extra appears in the MCE library.  I've also installed the new PowerController device to Vera and I'm following the configuration steps from this document; however, it's unclear to me what "enable MiOS" means under the first screen shot.  After unchecking "local mode" on that screen & entering my MiOS IP address and user name/password, the extender locks up & requires uninstallation.  That's where I'm stuck.

It has potential; too bad it doesn't work correctly.

since i really like this sort of plugin function i tried myself to get it working..
it seems the plugin luup files for the vera has a faulty  port adress.  in file i_powercontroller the port should be 53107 instead of 53007 i presume.
furthermore the mediacenter app itself is crashing as soon as i click next , nomatter what ip i  type.
i found out that it needs connect to the machine it is running on in local mode.  http://httP://localhost:53107  or
http://<your-local-ip>:53107 should work. Well i got it all going and some login appears on the webpage..  login: user    Pass:  pass    (go figure lol)
which leaves me on a empty page...  the webpage is in c:?program files/milliesoft/web  case u wonder where to find it..
so now i reinstalled the thing on my pc and it doesnt work anymore :-(
anyone care to have a look at the pc part as this seems to be the culprit ?
the web-dir shouldnt be in program files and the files for the plugin should be somewhere in progdata/roaming/blabla
welcome to the new win 7 way of handling userfiles lol, might as well learn it as it was implemented in windows 3.1 for starters but no decent programmer seems to know about the proper way to handel userfiles so microsux made it all easy for us and fixed a way around to make it still work (god i wonder where these holes in the security come from...)
anyways it is clearly a problem with the new (20 years old but oke ) user account data handling of win vista and up.
add there this latest upnp patches from microsoft to prevent little scriptkiddo's from harming ur sys and voila a non-working piece is there. then again we all know toddlers can and will be a pain in the ars sometimes cause they lack proper parenthing. elders is another thing, it sorta implements wishdom and knowledge whereas parenthing is more like preventing ur kids from looping.
so back to this wmc powercontrol.. it needs the mios plugin to be adjusted and installed first, then a reboot of the vera. then reboot ur pc as well (yeah why not) and then install this plugin for normal windows version on ur desktop pc. now reboot (yeah yeah i know..o-)) start mediacenter and try to put it on local. it should detect the vera and give an option to choose mios. (yup there is where it goes wrong) .  vera sends broadcast over 255.255.255.255 on port 53107 and pc will have a webserver running which should answer vera's call ( dont it sound like romeo and juliette lol ).. where the call is made the wmc service knows its there and starts its inqueries.  problems could be : firewall, the port (for sure) , webserver on wmc side which shouldnt have its data in programfiles. (now that i think of it.. IF you have this webserver running on wmc machine and it gives an empty page, it should be ok, allthough one cannot setup anything and dont see a settings link in the corner , it can be the win7 useraccount bla. to be short (im trying oke ! ) :  right mouse the webdir in programfiles and change owner to yourselfs account and close properties and open again and set admins and ur account to full control and try again. it should work in the end. i need it hehe

well.. here we are again..
im not sure if the port setting is the right setting.
here is to get it working:

-install the luup plugin on ur vera
-reboot the vera
-wait for it to be ready
-look and see if the power monitor is running on vera
-install mce powercontroller on desktop pc
-run the mediacenter prog
-goto extra and select powercontroller, if it stops responding start it again
-press next in the screen you get and do nothing there
-u get this webpage screen where u select webserver to run
-select webserver to be on and press save, then reboot
-hope it all goes well and see ur page @  http://<intern-ip-adress-of-ur-pc>:53107/edit_devices.html login=user  password=pass
-btw u can check after installation of powercontroller if the webserver is running, as it was at first when i installed the prog
-in the webpage select settings and set it to use mios.
-add a device and give it the same name as the z-wave switch and select use micasaverde/mios in the dropdownbox
-if u cannot repair the prog then uninstall reboot and install again. ( i.e. repair dont work)
-in the webpage select settings right on top and set it to use mios
it crashes on win7 x64 but should work on 32 bit

notes:
-settings not allways saved
- case it wont start anymore, wipe all files in c:\ProgramData\MillieSoft\PowerControllerMCE\  and restart
- webserver seems to have trouble to show main page
- i have this strange feeling the port numbers are not the same in the micasaverde plugin where it is 53007 and the pc where it has in settings port 53008
- the problem is in the windows part of the wmc extra plugin which gives boolean errors.
