Cree Connected light bulbs (Zigbee) with Vera Plus controller?
« on: February 20, 2016, 01:17:47 am »
The cree bulbs are very inexpensive and it would be nice to use them with the Vera Plus controller, which supports Zigbee:

http://creebulb.com/products/standard-a-type/connected-60-watt-replacement-soft-white-led-bulb

Home Depot sells them for about $15 each:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-Connected-60W-Equivalent-Soft-White-A19-Dimmable-LED-Light-Bulb-BA19-08027OMF-12CE26-1M100/205960026

Any thoughts? Has anyone got these to work?

Thanks!

Life is good when a 60watt equivalent light bulb for $15 is "inexpensive".

I've not used these specific bulbs. However they are Wink compatible and since Wink is known to work with Vera Plus, they should be fine.

Give one a try. Home Depot will take it back if it doesn't work to your satisfaction.

I picked one up to try but am not sure how to "pair" it with Vera. I know with z-wave you do something like turn it off and on, etc. I've tried those things but don't seem to have the Vera recognize it.

Trying to add a "generic zigbee" device.

I'll update with any news.

any luck? I added some GE zigbee bulbs and the first one comes in fine but all following get screwed up and show up as some weird plug in device and I can't do anything with them. First one works like a champ though.

So far no go. I had a friend show me how to reset the bulb using the 2 seconds on and 2 seconds off trick as shown on this page:

https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/204258280-Cree-Connected-LED-Bulb

But so far I am unable to get the Vera to recognize it at all. If it helps at all here is some log data of when I tried to pair it with the Vera Plus:

It's interesting that the GE Link A19 bulb is listed under the Devices -> Lights section but the cree is not. They're the same price at Home Depot so I might exchange the cree for that one to see if it makes any difference.

These might be the same as strohlde tried to configure.

Have you tried reloading the LUUP engine or rebooting the Vera Plus?

I've tried rebooting. Nothing. Same bulb works with Logitech Harmony. Is there hope of a solution here, or should I just send my Vera Plus back? I have a stock of these bulbs.

I thought I saw it in another thread here, but can't find it now to link. Supposedly Hue and Cree support the Zigbee Light Link profile, and VeraPlus only supports the Zigbee HA profile.

It's unlikely that the light bulbs will be updated to support the other profile. I don't know what it would take for the Vera Plus to support LL and HA. Hopefully it is just software and they could make it happen in an update.

Supposedly Hue and Cree support the Zigbee Light Link profile, and VeraPlus only supports the Zigbee HA profile.

I do not know about the Cree bulbs... BUT... According to some developers on the SmartThings forums, the Hue bulbs will join EITHER a ZLL (ZigBee Light Link) or ZHA (ZigBee Home Automation) network... There are many reports of the Hue bulbs being connected natively with the SmartThings hub (which is a ZHA hub, like the VeraPlus).

The Limiting factor is - Once a Hue bulb (and I suspect, the Cree bulb is the same) connects to a ZLL network, it moves to a ZLL channel (11, 15, 20, and 25) and stays on that channel until it is factory reset... A ZHA hub CAN use a ZLL channel, but normally does not... So, The hub can't find the bulb... (The logs I've seen from a VeraPlus show that the default channel used is channel 12).

A Hue bulb can only has a factory reset performed on it by a ZLL controller... Even though the Hue Bridge is a ZLL controller, it is not possible to use it to factory reset a Hue bulb.

If you obtain a factory fresh Hue Add-On (or Accessory) bulb (IE: Not a bulb from a starter kit - has never been connected to a hub), the bulb *SHOULD* be able to connect to the VeraPlus...

The Lutron Connected Bulb remote (CBR) is a ZHA/ZLL controller, and can factory reset a Hue (and other) bulb(s)... The CBR is readily available and inexpensive ($30CDN at Home Depot)... AND is an awesome little remote, so it may be worthwhile to get one (if you don't already have one) to do some testing...
Instructions for resetting a bulb with the CBR are HERE

Apparently, there are reports (and a statement from Philips) that the Hue Dimmer switch is also able to factory reset a hue bulb.

Can I factory reset a Hue light with the Hue dimmer switch?
Yes you can, press and hold the ON and OFF button simultaneously until the LED light on the dimmer switch turns green (Note: the lamp is blinking during this process. Hue Beyond and Hue Phoenix are excluded).

I have that controller and was able to factory reset a bulb. I assume when the bulb softly fades off and then back on again after the remote sequence that that indicates that it reset.

I tried to add it into the vera plus system but had no luck. But I may be experiencing a new problem somewhat unrelated to this - I can't seem to add ANY zigbee generic device now on my system. It just basically doesn't do anything.

If I specify a specific device it does show "Zigbee:Openjoin" or whatever it says. But for the generic device I can't seem to continue testing with the cree bulb.

Interesting! Good info, thanks. I'll bet the GE Link lights are the same. When I factory reset I can pair them directly with the CBR, but after pairing to Vera I had to also pair the CBR. The pairing with Vera must set both to ZHA. And in previous playing I could directly link the CBR to lights connected to a Hue hub without first pairing the CBR, which must be because they were all in ZLL mode. That is a curiosity solved.  :)

I wasn't aware you could do that with the CBR. The CBR is really well done, the only complaint I have is that there isn't a PDF manual, you have to watch the videos to figure out any of the features. I didn't watch all the videos (obviously) so I didn't catch this feature. In usage it works much like other Lutron stuff, you would think it was a normal wired switch. As a matter of fact it feels more responsive with the GE Link lights than the regular Picos with Caseta dimmers. I have a feeling that is due to the longer fade on/off times when using Picos. The Link Lights also fade in/out with the CBR, but much faster (sub 1 second I think), it makes them feel super responsive.

To factory reset the Cree Bulb: Remove power (turn the switch off) for two seconds, turn it on for two seconds, repeat. It should flash the fourth time you turn it back on, this means it is reset. I managed to reset the bulb this way and connect it to the Vera Plus but it is not configuring correctly to control it. I get "device failed to configure" errors. I'm thinking I could get it to work if I can figure out the device type and other settings under advanced.

I just canceled my order for VeraPlus.  I don't know why it would be so hard to work with a bulb that says it will work with any Zigbee certified hub.  For now I will be using the Lutron Connected Remotes to control my Cree bulbs.  If I can't find another solution soon, I may just get a smart things hub.
