openLuup: Sonos
« on: March 29, 2016, 05:18:30 pm »
This has been a topic that has been discussed in the past (AV Plugins) but I felt this deserved it's own thread for community discussion/involvement.  My production system is an x86 running OpenWrt/openLuup. This system has one Sonos running locally and works well playing music. If I add another Sonos, both stop working all together (details are left in the previous AV discussion). This was never resolved nor did I pursue it further since a workaround was simply utilizing the bridge to control the remaining devices.

Recently I attempted to test the Sonos plugin (v1.4) again using the latest openLuup development branch. The systems were both an x86 and Odroid XU4 running Debian Jessie 8.3. No other plugins were installed. Out-the-gate, a failure occurs and the plugin ceases to function. Obviously on a Vera, this plugin works perfectly.

I'm looking for feedback (good, bad or otherwise) regarding the use of this plugin within openLuup. If you're unable to get this plugin working locally, please provide details (e.g detailed log data, number of Sonos systems, environment etc.). Providing this information will help in identifying if it's time to reach out to the developer of the Sonos plugin and see if that individual will assist.

Thanks in advance...

I've attached a snapshot of the attributes and the settings from AltUI.  Note that I do NOT have the discovery patch installed, I do not run the UPnP proxy, and also that in my original startup.lua configuration of the device I explicitly set the IP using luup.ip_set()

For your error, the Lua code on line 947 can certainly generate that if ProxyApiVersion is nil.  It should be rewritten so, to avoid this:
Code: [Select]
  function proxyVersionAtLeast(n)
    return tonumber((ProxyApiVersion or ''):match("^(%d+)") or 0) >= n
  end

However, we need to discover why it's not defined in the first place.  I can only assume that you are, in fact, running the proxy?

Your log entry is interesting as I don't see that on either of my test systems. Let me make an adjustment to the function and see what the result is...
Code: [Select]
2016-03-30 14:49:22.610   luup_log:9: Sonos: error: Cannot contact UPnP event proxy: connection refused

Interesting, running a small test against getProxyApiVersion, the result is "nil" and the code is "closed" on both my x86/Debian @ work and my rPi3/Debian @ home. So it makes sense why you're saying I'm running UPnP... But I can't seem to find out where that is.... All tests (so far) indicated I'm not but this code says otherwise and your log entries say your not. Ugh !

Edit: Attached screen shot of Sonos Play1 @ home... This device was installed via Lua test setting the IP...

Code: [Select]
    if (request == nil and code == "timeout") then
        -- Proxy may be busy.
        warning("Temporarily cannot communicate with proxy")
        return nil
    elseif (request == nil and code ~= "closed") then
        -- Proxy not running.
        error("Cannot contact UPnP event proxy: " .. code)
        return ""
    else
        -- Proxy is running, note its version number.
        ProxyApiVersion = table.concat(t)
        return ProxyApiVersion
    end

Since I'm unable to SSH into my system at home (blocked by office firewall), I ran the adjusted function (proxyVersionAtLeast) on my x86 here and it's starting clean (thanks for that). Obviously I don't have a Sonos here so I'm cheating a bit and I'm limited to what I can do.

I believe it has to do with localhost, for example this results in nil/closed which acts like a proxy is running
Code: [Select]
    local t = {}
    local request, code = http.request({
        url = "http://localhost:2529/version",
        create = sock,
        sink = ltn12.sink.table(t)
    })

And this results in nil/connection refused...
Code: [Select]
    local t = {}
    local request, code = http.request({
        url = "http://127.0.0.1:2529/version",
        create = sock,
        sink = ltn12.sink.table(t)
    })

Pinging localhost results in..
Code: [Select]
root@Test:/etc/dhcp# ping -c 2 localhost
PING localhost (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.044 ms
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.054 ms

--- localhost ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.044/0.049/0.054/0.005 ms

And restoring the Lua file (albeit patching localhost with 127.0.0.1) yields this..
Code: [Select]

Interesting.  I have just found an old note to myself re. Sonos that says

"accesses iptables (looking for UPnP Proxy?)"

...but not sure what I ever did about that.  Will have to dig further.

Yes, looks to be used exclusively for the Discovery Patch (check, install and uninstall)... Will test more tonight and see what happens...

rPi3/Debian with the Lua file set to 127.0.0.1 rather than localhost.... Things looked good up until 20:24:24.276 (when I pressed the play button). Also, as long as you're root then the iptables message we often see within the CLI doesn't show itself anymore.

AND the oddest thing ever, if I start the music using the Sonos app on my iPad - I then have what appears to be control over the Sonos device(s)...

Device:
[1] Start
[2] Stop

Control:
[1] Track info
[2] Play, pause, stop, vol, mute and next operate.

Player:
[1] Play
[2] Stop
[3] Album art is displayed

Help:
[1] Works, I can only assume it needed track info in order to render....

I've since added 2 more Sonos systems and they wouldn't work until I started a track from the Sonos app. I'm confused about all of this.. Posting logs of the startup and operation of all 3 devices. I'm going to sleep on this one and see if it all still operates in the morning.

And I've slept and all 3 of them are still working even after a reboot.. So I'll move the remainder over tonight to this test box and do some further testing using TTS.
So questions remain.

[1] Why does the code have to be adjusted from localhost to 127.0.0.. Am I missing something in a Linux config perhaps ?
[2] When adding a device it seems it won't work out-of-the box until an external device (e.g Sonos for iPad, Android, Windows) initiates a stream. Then it's happy.

Could be.  Whatever it is, it's not an openLuup fix, since it's just a call to http.request()

Don't know either, but if it's just a one-off fix then I could live with that.  I may have had the same issue once, but I did so many things to begin with, trying to get TTS to work (seems it was a Google problem) it's lost in the mists of time.

I checked the hosts file and everything looks good so I'm not sure what to change if anything. And yes, I can live with this if it works and it just one step closer to having most everything non-zwave running successfully on openLuup. I'll keep this thread going with updates on TTS and see if I can find the root cause of the localhost issue.

Update:

Looks like TTS will require a /www directory. A symbolic resolved my error (SonosTTS line 147) but I can't tell (@ work) if the speech is being delivered.  Should also note that an action will certainly kick-off a favorite however selecting a favorite via the UI will not (another UPnP error in the log).

Edit: wget needs adjustment (location of arguments) within the TTS file. Will post once I figure out this encoding issue (ugh).
Edit: Sonos Implementation file; need to adjust the VERA_WEB_PORT from 80 to 3480....

Code: [Select]
local SAY_TMP_FILE = "/tmp/Say.%s.%s.mp3"
local SAY_OUTPUT_FILE = "/www/Say.%s.%s"
local SAY_OUTPUT_URI = "%s/Say.%s.%s"
local CONCAT_EXECUTE = "cat %s > %s ; rm %s"
local DELETE_EXECUTE = "rm /www/Say.%s.*"

Re-ran my test this morning and spotted something odd [openLuup.server:: Unsupported HTTP request:HEAD], I'm not sure what's occurring here but obviously something to do with this plugin pushing the MP3 file through requesting Sonos to access the file via openLuup...

When I played the mp3 file using Sonos it works, no complaint regarding the encoding issue.  When I execute an action for say within openLuup, the Sonos app tells me it's not properly encoded. I'm not sure how much further I can go with troubleshooting ... Hoping for any pointers here ..

Interesting.  Although I ran across the "file not found" problem when trying TTS, it seemed to be linked to the patchy availability of Google Translate.  It didn't seem to be a problem when using Microsoft, although I gather that has its own issues from time to time.

The HEAD request error is understandable: the openLuup server does, indeed, not support it - mostly though my laziness and the fact that I've never seen anything else require that.  Should be not to hard to add it.

Depending on the distro, IF we don't have a /www then yes - it'll throw an error (not really an error though). We could point this somewhere else (somewhere within openLuup) to keep it happy. Otherwise if /www exists then it's programmed to remove the file in the event one already exists (a fail-safe of sorts). So I added -f to the rm command and that quiets that down (-f; ignore nonexistent files, never prompt). So with a slight modification of the wget arg's everything runs pretty smoothly. I see other speech functions doing the same (wget) so those would need to be modified as well. You're right though, Microsoft does work as I accidentally tripped on it the other day. I'll do my best to clean up what I can or at the very least add more debugging to the file so the other TTS methods work... Hate having to change all this to be honest.

So it sound as if the Sonos is fetching the file off Vera.. Makes sense, had to lookup the HEAD method ! For those wondering, an excerpt is below...

Code: [Select]
The HEAD method is identical to GET except that the server MUST NOT return a message-body in the response. The meta information contained in the HTTP headers in response to a HEAD request SHOULD be identical to the information sent in response to a GET request. This method can be used for obtaining meta information about the entity implied by the request without transferring the entity-body itself. This method is often used for testing hypertext links for validity, accessibility, and recent modification.
