Optimal tablet size
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:58:37 am »
Hi,
I'd like to use a wall mounted tablet which runs Imperihome as my main smart home control centre.
Few questions:
1. which screen size do you recommend? I am thinking on either 7" or 8"
2. any specific recommended tablet model?
3. any recommended frame for hanging on the wall?

Thanks,
Avi

I've mounted several 7" tablets around the wall... all are Acers that I purchased as refurbs from Amazon. a couple have died after 2 years, but at $70 I'm not too unhappy.

I found some store bought picture frames that I routered out a bit for a bit.... and it looks really nice.

If I were to do it over, i'd probably go with 8"... I have a few of those now on desktops, and the extra screen size does help.  I think it depends on how good your eyesight is :-)

I'd also buy a named refurb over a cheap knockoff... just seem to be higher quality.  also, there is a noticeable difference between 1GB and 2GB ram in terms of performance... Not a big difference in higher resolutions.  Again, may depend on what other apps you want to run.

I use these frames and power extenders, and they work well http://www.vidabox.com/kiosks/

I have some old HP Touchpad 10" tablets that I used as wall controllers. I recently purchased a 7" noname Chinapad that has a higher resolution than those venerable Touchpads and realized the resolution made the 7" more useful than the 10" ones. So I would suggest to also check on what resolution a certain tablet has as well as size. Still using the Touchpads though with the touchstone wireless charger and CyanogenMod Android OS but as portable controllers instead.

I had 3 Tab 4s mounted in custom frames in 3 rooms with wall warts maintaining a constant charge on them.

Started to get random "Ghost" firings on many of my scenes and Pleg triggers.  It actually ran a home away scene, locked all my doors and set the alarm while I was in the front yard!

Turned out that the digitisizer on one of my tabs had failed.  The cause turned out to be a bloated battery due to overcharging (I suppose?).  Samsung?  Worried about setting my house on fire.

I'm thinking about adding an Aeon in-wall micro controller behind each to throttle the recharge rate.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I have five ficed tablets mounted around the house running ImperiHome. Three of them are refurb Nexus 7 tablets, and the main unit in the kitchen is a 10 inch "Neutab". I've found that the Nexus are the most reliable for WIFi connections, the Neutab works pretty well but the access point is only 15 feet away.

The iPad version of Imperihome is terrible as compared to the Android version.  I only recently found this out in real time as I just purchased a Tab A tablet to replace an oler iPad that is now acting up a little.  Wow is the Android version SOOO much better.
