7.0.19b -- anyone try it yet?
« on: November 17, 2016, 04:40:09 pm »
http://support.getvera.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2645453-ui7-%E2%96%BE-beta-software-update-%E2%96%BE-version-7-0-19b-1-7-891-1-7-2348-1-7-2349-%E2%96%BE-november-16-2016

Native Alexa support and lua encoding fixed supposedly.

Please add any results. Especially interested if the Alexa support requires the Vera to be connected to the net or if it's able to be controlled locally like a Hue bridge.

I updated my spare Veralite yesterday.
As usual the normal update procedure could not download the firmware so again I had to download the files to a computer and move them to Vera using WinSCP and start the updating progress using SSH from putty issuing a command.

When the updating process had completed and Vera rebooted it got stuck in the blue LED blinking state. Unplugging it did not help but holding the reset button for 20s resulted in a normal bootup and since then it has been running fine with the new firmware.

You do this at your own risk!!

Basically there are two files which must be renamed and then copied on the unit in /tmp/. The example below is for the 1.7.891 firmware version for Veralite. Seems like the same files should be used for the Vera 3

First you will need to download the two files on your computer:

http://download.mios.com/rt3662_betafirmware/rt3662_Luup_ui7-1.7.891-en-mios.squashfs
http://download.mios.com/rt3662_betafirmware/rt3662_Luup_ui7-1.7.891-en-mios.sh

and renamed into:

newmios.squashfs
newmios-hooks.sh

after the files are copied into /tmp/ on your Vera device you will need to run the below command in SSH on the unit (I used putty). You will need to login as root so you need to find out the root password.

ash -x /usr/bin/cmh-upgrade.sh

Please note that the two links above are for the 1.7.891 firmware version for the next firmware versions those links will change.
If you can not copy the files in to your Vera device because it is out of space you need to clean something out or contact support so they can help you.

Installed onto my Plus. No sign of any problems. Still have device not found on my ZRC-90 scene controller so that not fixed. I don't have Alexa so no comment on that.

The list of bugfixes is surprisingly short on this release while some of the things listed as known issues where allready there on the previous release. It seems like the main focus is on new features.

This is indeed again a very small update after a very long time. I think it is fair to say Vera passed away...

The gap is too big to fill (assuming no miracles exist).

A real pity.
Good firmware is more important than good karma. (and this costed me lots of Karma)

Vera is doing much better.  The fixes should drop over time unless new features are added.  The releases are better, more stable, less destructive if at all, and Vera uses the community to test betas. In addition Vera has a good eye on the future.  Example enabling Alexa skills.  Very nice timing.  I already tied Alexa to Vera Plus.  This can make the verbal commands more natural when controlling some devices.  Example instead of saying "turn on the lock" you can say "lock the door".  Kudos for leveraging another's technological benefits "while" advances can be made to Vera.

Surprisingly I didn't have any LUA restarts since installing this beta. Previously it would restart at least twice daily.
Avg load seems to be slightly lower ~0.1 (I have 70+ devices, but I migrated a lot of plugins and some of the devices to openhab I ran parallel with Vera)
Amazon Echo integration works fine.
Didn't notice anything else besides new subscription based features related to cameras and monitoring.

Tried to upgrade to it by copying the URL.

Timer made it to about 2 minutes then told me it had failed. Just glad everything came back after cycling the power. Bought the Amazon Dot when I saw this capability was getting rolled in but my Vera 3 crapped itself trying to transition.

Upgraded a Plus and an Edge earlier tonight without issues. Unboxed an Echo and set it up. Good thing I have next week off. :-)
