Alexa / Vera - local?
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:18:43 pm »
Does anyone know if the alexa / Vera integration is local or if it is cloud based?   My ha bridge connected locally (yes, I know I need cloud for echo itself) and everything was always pretty fast. I'm just starting with this version and didn't know if it was connecting over wifi or through the MI casa servers.

Yes and No.  All Alexa apps require an active link to Amazon where the actual speech interpretation occurs.  It then appears that Amazon issues secure commands to Vera that are not unlike remote commands from an iPhone app to Vera's servers, and then back to our local devices.  However, I am amazed at how fast everything responds.  Bottom-line, without an external internet connection Alexa is a paper-weight.
