UI5 vs UI7
« on: December 25, 2016, 10:31:37 am »
Is anyone choosing UI7 over UI5?  I'm seeing so many complaints about UI7 that I'm afraid to make the move on my Vera3 but some of the Apps are no longer being supported for UI5.  Should I chance it or stay put?

I went from 5 to 6 a couple of years ago and from 6 to 7 summer of 2016. I like it better, but I also use PLEG for a lot of my complex automations.

With Vera3, there is no need to move... and UI7 is still very buggy. I have found several since being on it for 2 months. I only use UI7 because I'm on VeraPlus.

I suspect it will take another year for Vera to fix the remaining major UI7 I'm seeing. I think they have 1 developer working part time ;-)

Hi RLM--

I purchased a Vera Plus when it hit the market (Feb 16) then waited almost a year to make the transition to Vera Plus (and UI7). I was concerned about the stability of UI7. Although it is much better than now, it still has some shortfalls. The Amazon Echo (Alexa) integration was what prompted me to move to UI7.

Not sure when I will get the Secure, but eventually I will need Z-Wave Plus and Bluetooth connectivity. For now, the Vera 3 has served me (mostly) well for almost 4 years.

I made the switch last weekend as one of the devices I wanted to integrate was only supported in UI7. I'm regretting the decision as I'm now dealing with bizarre problems such as rouge devices magically appearing on Vera after a few days, incorrect values being set on the thermostat, scenes not firing off.

My recommendation is: unless you really really really need to upgrade to UI7, don't :)

Thanks to all who replied to my question.  I think I will stick with UI5 until my Vera3 dies.  For now it works for me.

Hi There,

Any new experiences here? I've been using UI5 for more than 5 years now and it works fine.
But I'm considering an upgrade because I am noticing that some newer devices are not fully compatible. Like for instance the Fibaro RGBW swithc. I just can't seem to pare this.

Also I see the new Verasecure now and I'm wondering if it might be time to replace my Vera3.

I'd love some firsthand experiences...

Wouter

Same situation here for me. Even updated the firmware over the weekend. I have some switches in my shopping cart and will be looking to add some sensors, otherwise UI7 on Vera 3 still going strong and Vera Secure is on my list for perhaps 2018.

I will caution - updating the firmware on a UI7 Vera 3 typically means you do not have enough memory. So what I do is:
1) Backup (with z-wave).
2) Do a factory reset (frees up memory by deleting all devices and plug-ins).
3) Update the firmware.
4) Restore from backup (with z-wave).

and remember to reboot a few times, especially after the reset, firmware update, and restore to make sure everything takes.  Takes about 45 minutes.
