Our condo Rental and Vera
« on: November 05, 2010, 08:37:19 am »
Vera has allowed us to free ourselves from a 35% service fee from our Condo rental program.  (HUGE COST SAVINGS!!)  We do not have to rely on anyone else since our renters do not need a key.  We control all lights, ceiling fan, bathroom fan, thermostat.  This again saves us money as we turn everything off after the renter is gone.

CHALLENGES

Our biggest problem now is the fact that we cannot schedule the codes for the door.  With the new UI4, scheduling is not working which is a HUGE INCONVENIENCE.

I was told that it would be fixed with the new UI, but still waiting for a release.

Any ideas when this may come???

I confess that my love for the Vera doesn't extend to allowing the Vera to control the lock to the door.  I decided there was simply too much risk of problems that would effectively keep our guests locked out, so we went with using the eRentalLock which is more expensive, but as a standalone device it doesn't depend upon our internet connection, WiFi network, z-Wave network, power supplies to any of the previously mentioned hardware or our electricity connection.

Isn't it possible to write some Luup code that will set the pin code at a scheduled time?

I use the schlage deadbolt with no problem. However I don't schedule combo changes.  As a failsafe I still have a pushbutton lockbox with a key for the schlage.  I don't give that combo out.  So if all goes to hell, they can call me or the housekeeper and get the manual combo to the lockbox and get in.  Never had to use that in the last year.

I am not too worried about changing the combos for each rental as my place is more repeat people that I have dealt with many times and not ones that I really worry about coming back or staying later than they should.

As if to prove my point about the problems of changing pin codes with a Vera the cable modem just died overnight at one of our villas and now we have to wait until Monday for the cable people to come out and repair it.  Fortunately we don't have any guests in at the moment and we aren't expecting any, but if I was relying upon the Vera to change the code it would be a pain.

We also have a lockbox with physical key in it just in case.

We actually have 2 codes that are designated as failsafe.  In the event that the guest could not get in with their code, we already have a backup.

Scheduling is a priority if you have high, less than weekly, occupancy.  I let the guest tell me what code they want and I like to enter their codes upon their reservation.  Without Vera scheduling the codes, the door will only hold 8 codes and I already use 3.

Aside from this, Vera is awesome.  I love having guests on the phone while they are there and showing them just how much control I have over everything.

I like the idea of guests picking their code ahead of time as well as having a failsafe code... great idea.  I may give that a try.
