1) Go to this link (specifically) to get to the develop branch release: https://github.com/toggledbits/SiteSensor/tree/develop

2) Click the "Clone or download" (green) button, and choose "Download ZIP".

3) Unzip the downloaded ZIP file.

4) Upload each file (except the .md files, which are just docs) to your Vera using the uploader at Apps > Develop Apps > Luup files. Make sure to turn off the "Restart Luup after upload" checkbox until the last file; turn it back on for that last file (if you forget, just check the box and upload the file again--that's harmless).

5) Hard-reload/cache flush your browser (CTRL-F5 for Chrome/Win, SHIFT-F5 for Firefox/Win, CMD+SHIFT+R on most Mac browsers, etc.).

Followed yr. instruction but without any luck. No device generated. Even not after a full restart. No pobs, will wait until official release. In the meantime however, trying to use response.rain.1h as Expression results in an error. Is the digit"1" playing havoc in this? If so, how to make sure it's being read as text.

Try response.rain['1h']. If that doesn't do it, please post the full response.
