Smart Padlock
« on: September 27, 2017, 12:36:05 am »
I'm looking for a smart solution for my vinyl fence gates. I have a fence going up in a month and I could use simple padlocks for security, but it would be nice to have remote unlock possibilities. Masterlock makes Bluetooth locks, but those will likely never work on my Vera Plus. Anyone use or know of some possible solutions?
Thanks

You could use something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-FM143-Mighty-Mule-Openers/dp/B0009SS13Q

There are a few ways to get it integrated into Vera, mysensors or something like a zwave binary/dry contact switch would probably work.

I'm afraid this will be overkill. I won't be able to get a power source to it, so battery powered is a must.

I'm waiting for confirmation, but I believe the lock will be on the outside of the fence. I will need access to the latch from the outside, so thinking a lock will be located there.

Honestly, the Bluetooth lock by Masterlock would be perfect...if it was Z-wave.

Vera Plus has BLE, but I haven't attempted to try it.

From all the other posts on outside gate locks with Vera that I have seen, I think all of them recommend the Mule locks.

I think the Mule lock is 12V. So an old car battery would probably work for a long time, or maybe even an outdoor lighting transformer like this https://www.amazon.com/LightingWill-Waterproof-Transformer-Voltage-3-Prong/dp/B01MXOXA6M

This will probably be the route I go next spring when our fence is being installed.

The built in Bluetooth is sort of unsupported now. I've read they will make changes to it in a future firmware update. I'm not holding my breath.

The utilities were located this morning, so the fence will start next week. I'll get a better idea of my options after I can actually see it.

The options you posted may work for 1 gate. I forgot I do have in unused outlet that will be on the inside of the fence.

I like what this guy did here, because it includes and outdoor zwave keypad for entry with a pin.
