Sylvania RGBW A19 Bulb Setup
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:26:01 pm »
Just purchased a pair of these Sylvania RGBW A19 Bulbs and paired them with Vera Secure. Paired OK BUT now can not control either bulb via the UI7. No On/Off or color control. Basically nothing! Anyone have any success with these bulbs that they can share. If not they'll be going back to Amazon.

Next question; Do I need this hub to make the bulbs actually work?

Any help is appreciated.

The Sylvania bulbs speak ZLL (Zigbee Light Link)... The Vera speaks ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation).. Vera does not recognize the "protocol" that the bulbs speak, and will not control them...

Additionally, the Vera implementation of ZHA does not support the clusters (ie: commands) required to operate Tunable White or RGB color bulbs. This has been an ongoing situation since the release of the Vera Plus almost two years ago.. In that time, there have been NO significant updates to the Zigbee capabilities of the Vera.

The Lightify hub is NOT required to use the bulbs... The bulbs can be also be used with a smartthings hub, a wink hub or with several other hubs (or home automation software with the correct hardware addons)..

Even with the lightify, or other hubs, you can not get the bulbs working with Vera... (Unless you have a Wink hub and use the Wink plugin).

If you need color RGB bulbs, you could go with the Yeelight or TP-Link bulbs (with the WiFi UDP plugin)... or the LIFX bulbs (with the WiFi UDP plugin or LIFX plugin) or the Milight or LimitlessLED bulbs (with the WiFi bridge and the MiLight plugin)... And there are probably more options that I can't think of right now...

I was able to get a Sylvania A19 RGBW bulb paired with Vera. However, it only supports dimming and on/off functionality. The above poster is only correct for the European version of these bulbs, which are indeed shipped with ZLL firmware (and the American bulbs used to be able to be flashed to the ZLL firmware, enabling them to be, e.g., paired with a Hue hub). The current American bulbs are actually ZigBee 3.0. See this reddit thread and this comment.

I feel like it should be easy to add RGBW functionality as well with a bit of extra work, but I'm new to Vera. SmartThings (which supports ZHA 1.2 as well--and which I'm trying to move away from) is able to work with this bulb perfectly well, so that shouldn't be the problem, just the capabilities of the stock "device handlers" (to use SmartThings terminology) in Vera. If anyone has an existing working solution, I'd be curious to know as well!
