I just spoke to Schlage again today.  Our SDK will be shipped on January 1.  They expect the locks to hit the market by late January.

It would be impressive if we could program it for 'presence' detection. For instance if it recognises your bluetooth cellphone, it unlocks if within 30ft, or locks when your cellphone leaves bluetooth range. The possibilities!

Yeah, forget your cellphone at home and leave the door unlocked for a day...  :)

You would need a bluethoot watch that vibrates when out of range from the phone..
It would be rather hard to implement this when you are more than one in the family... I know I would never ever be allowed by my wife to even try to implement it at home, but for the closet where all my computer equipent is  ;D ;D

I've been interested in the Schlage z-wave lock for a while now too.  But... I'd be more interested in something a little more advanced and a little more convenient like something with a proximity sensor.

  • Using an old fashion key is a good backup.
  • Using a pin pad is ok for something boring
  • Using a finger scanner is convenient but not always practical with our dirty meat hands.
  • Access via VERA over the internet is an awesome feature when not at home.
  • But, using a proximity sensor like bluetooth in a cell phone or just a cheap secure RFID fob that you can give out to family members whould be ideal.

What about a combination of these items from this website... would these work?

Looks like they are the only online retailer for this lock, referenced from the Schlage "Where to buy" section...

Yeah and if you notice they are trying to sell it for $399. Schlage in their press releases says msrp shjould be $299. Looks like someone is trying to make an extra buck because they are exclusive. I may have to wait for B&D's ZWAVE lock!
