Cree CR6 LED Downlight
« on: February 08, 2011, 11:34:43 pm »
Does anybody have any experience with the Cree CR6 LED downlight? Cree says it's compatible with a Leviton 600W dimmer and it can be dimmed down to 5%.

They're still fairly expensive at $50, but I'm hoping it can be a replacement for when they ban 60w incandescents in the next 5 years.

I have a bunch of the Cree CR6.  I have replaced most of my downlights with these.  They work great with GE 45613 Z-Wave Three way dimmer.

I'm running over 100 of these lights, all on Leviton z-wave dimmers.   I think they're outstanding:  good color, instant on, dimmable, last nearly forever.  Have a few that do flicker if you dim all the way to 5%, they're fine at 10% which is close enough.  Do have a few that will occasionally flicker a bit at certain other levels but easily cured by a bump up or down in the level).

But absolutely thrilled with them vs. CFL.  Home Depot carries them in store.   Local power company ran a special subsidizing them, so was able to get them at $39/each.  Still pricey, but happy with the performance, definitely worth it to me.

Not only does Home Depot have them, they are now reduced to $19.97, I just bought 5 of them...  Tried one on a single GE dimmer, and it does fluctuate a bit even at full "on" (this is the Radio Shack GE dimmer).  The other Dimmer will have (4) of these on it, so my guess is that one will be fine (with a 42W load on it), each LED lamp is 10.5 Watts.

They are availble in-store only...

Wow! That's a deal. They're not even available in store for me.

Can you expand on the flucuations you're having on the single GE dimmer? I'm going to have the same type of setup, and it has to pass inspection by the boss. Does it flicker a lot at all dim levels?

It show up at 49.97 on the HD website.   It this an in-store price?

At the dimmer, even when its "full on", with a single CREE lamp, there is a slow pulsing of bright to dim, not too noticeable, unless you are looking directly at the bulb.  I don't expect this to be an issue in the kitchen, which will have 4 of these bulbs on 1 dimmer (42 watts), I think it's just an issue because of the very low wattage (a single light is only 10.5 watts), this is even mentioned in the instructions, that multiple lamps should be fine on dimmers, but a single may have issues.

One more thing, they say they only fit 6" housings (5.75" to 6.5" of width), and you need at least 6.5" of height as well.  Well, I had a 5" housing in the one I've done so far, and I was able to fit it in, now as far as removing it, that may be another issue, but I can worry about that in 15-20 years when it finally goes south (35,000 hours of life, in theory)

Yes, the $19.97 price is in-store only, and I am in the Northeast (Boston area), I've heard they are priced higher in other parts of the country.  I might be willing to pick some up and ship them out for a few people...  They come in cartons of 12. With 4 lamps per "tray", and they are kind of bulky in the packaging, but not that heavy to ship.  My local Home Depot had none, but the stores all around it had anywhere from 100 to 125 each.

Mitch,

Do you have a SKU or UPC code for the package?  I'd like to pick up a set, so I figure I'll call the local stores to find out their price.

Thanks.

Yes, the part # is "499-485", "EcoSmart LED Downlight with Integrated Trim"

the part # on the instruction sheet is "ECO-575L, ECO-GU24-575L" (the 2nd one is if you are using a GU24 style socket)

and, of course these are made in China :(

FYI, this is the PDF instruction sheet that comes in the package, might be helpfull to measure your existing cans, to see if they will fit.  I did manage to get 1 on a 5" wide can... even though it sais 5.75"-6.5" width required, you also need 6.5" of height.

This is the recomended dimmer list, from CREE for these as well...

Mitch,

Thanks.  I called our local store, and they bulbs are the regular price of $49.99 there.  They did tell me that if you can get me the store number you bought them from, it's possible that they would match the price.  Do you have the store number?  Hopefully, it's on the top of the receipt.

Thanks again.

Seems like the $19.97 pricing is only a weekly special in MA, but other stores will honor that price as well.  I just called my local store in South Florida; after checking with the stores in MA, the store manager offered to match the price.  Hard to resist at that price; so I got 4 of them already.

I hope to see more GU10 socket, LED dimmable bulbs, so I can start replacing my 50W halogen bulbs inside 3" diameter recessed light fixtures.
