I don't know as I have replaced it with the 500 that I have yet to get paired :( There is nothing on the unit that I see that has firmware listed.

If the menu is similar to the 400, then you should be able to navigate to the Menu->Thermostat Info  on the thermostat.

I have a Vera3 and a Trane thermostat.  Works like a charm.  I had it professionally installed.  It has been running for about a year and not a single problem. :)

Nest vs Trane

I am trying to decide between a Trane (on sale at amazon for $84 or the Nest, considerably more expensive at $250. Any opinions? Also is installing either equally easy/complicated. Also any features Ill miss on on or the other ? Ill appreciate any input , thanks

Where did you buy the TZEMT500BB3?  According to Google, the only place that thing exists is in your post...
