ModeStateForEnergy always 1

I have a Trane thermostat and ModeStateForEnergy is always set to 1 even when I switch on/off Energy Saving Mode. Is this the correct variable for me to look at for the status of ESM?

Haven't verified it recently, but it used to be represented by the on/off state of the device.
