I clicked on the uk link above and installed the new skill.  I then went to the Alexa app and discovered devices and then tried the voice command to turn on the dining room lights.

The Echo responses that is couldn't find a device or group named 'dining room' in Mark's profile

Both links install Beta US for me in the UK which of course means it doesn't discover in the Alexa page.

If you are going to close a thread can you put a summary & explanation in the child thread please.

e.g. Closed previous thread linky as the situation has now changed. but current situation as Vera see it XYZ.

e.g.
------------------
We had an issue X with both the US & UK versions on firmware 7.020 (previous versions not supported) caused by Y that meant we saw condition V . We expect it to be fixed by Z. We have tested in the US but would appreciate if someone could test in UK.

Closed previous thread linky as the situation has now changed.

I have asked 3 users to test the links above in US & UK. I expect to have feedback by 2pm UK time etc.

MC.
------------------

We understand you are under pressure but the more you tell us the less frustrated we will be. Just a view from my side.

Alex

Alex, I agree and understand and while I'd like to give you the rundown of what happened I'm not in a position to give an official statement. I can give my personal statement and thats that it wasn't something we controlled or expected to happen.

The invite links have been confirmed working now, i will send an email to the beta list.

Used the US link above and it worked perfectly.  All devices were discovered and Alexa is receiving/executing commands.

Thanks Vlad. I'm not looking to apportion blame in the summary. I would be perfectly happy with "an unexpected issue between our Skill & Amazon" or similar. Point is if you say the problem is in the boot we know not to bother looking at the bonnet.

Have tried it again, its still loading the US Beta skill but I can now discover lights again and my office lights are obeying my command.

Not sure what you did but it seems to be fixed.

Back up and running again....Thanks!
Although my Wife rolls her eyes as I find more ways to use the voice control, last night she came to bed and asked if I was going to turn off the lights throughout our home...I told her she would have to do it through the app since the voice control was currently not working.... I think she's starting to enjoy this option.   ;)

Not working for me.  The link is working now, but when I go to click "Finish", it seems way to quickly to give the green check and state "Done", but then I get the error "An error occurred while attempting to link Alexa with the external provider. Please try again later.".  I'm at work and not on my home network, but this used to work fine from work I believe.

Vlad I usually don't want to beat a dead horse but the way this was handled was "Classic Vera"... wasting a good hour+ of my time, and many more hours of the rest of the community.

I reported this problem in the morning on the forums and via an email to yoru beta email address... the support agent responded quickly (which was a nice surprise) but they told me the problem was MY FAULT. They said I needed to install the Alexa Helper Plugin. Funny, that plugin WAS installed until I used your US Email Link. AND, how does that have anything to do with the Amazon Skill not being on the Amazon site?

SEVERAL problems unrelated to technicals...
1. Vera LLC didnt - test everything just prior to release to ensure all systems were working
2. Vera LLC didnt - monitor the forums for problems
3. Vera LLC didnt - immediately test said posted problems
4. Vera LLC didnt - immediately inform thier tech/beta support staff of the problems
5. Vera LLC didnt - immediately inform users there was a verified problems and to stop spending time on it, they'd be notified when it was fixed

Yup, CLASSIC VERA I've seen for 5+ years ... this is why Vera is losing users, especially the plugin developers which make the plugins that are the only reason Vera is competitive in this market, period. Without them, Vera has less capability then most other platforms.

We really want to love Vera... but the way Vera handles all things just makes it increasingly impossible.

The new link worked for me BUT,

On every command, Alexa replies with "Sorry, the devics (name) is not responding"

Then the device DOES respond and does what was requested.  Even dimmer switches work, but only after the delay and "Sorry" message.

I had this problem before this latest fiasco, so it's better than yesterday.  Thanks!

(anyone else having this problem, or suggestions for solutions?)

I haven't had that issue with Vera, but I had that exact issue when I was on SmartThings and had it connected to Alexa. She would say sorry, but do what I asked anyway. It seemed to just fix itself after a couple of days.

Thanks becky.  It's been like that since the first update to the beta.  I'll take this to a new thread so this one can stay on

Yay!  It works again!!!

I believe I just got my Vera skill working again. I'm not near my Echo to prove it but the skill seems to be updating devices and I can get to the Vera utility page using Vlad's link but not using the recent emails. Very frustrating that the emails didn't have accurate links and/or created a problem and Vera didn't immediately acknowledge and send a new email. Use this link and good luck.

I am also up and running again, but this time, instead of "re-enabling" the existing devices on the Alexa side of things, new ones were created and the previous ones show as offline.   I'll now need to go through the process of "forgetting" the old devices and fixing my group definitions in the Alexa app.

Title: Re: Amazon Alexa Home Skill Update (2) - with new invite links
Post by: mtruppi on March 09, 2017, 11:20:14 am
Well, like most I followed the new link, and this one works and allows the skill to be enabled on my Alexa unit.  The skill showed up and the devices showed up after a discovery.

Couple of observations, and I know my systems is different than the typical users.

I have two Vera units bridged and almost all control needed is on the main unit.  (Vera 1)  With the previous skills no matter what I had checked in the list, or given custom names, they all showed up in the list from Vera 1 and Vera 2.  This seems to have been corrected in this skill since I only see the devices or items I wanted.  Before it was a little bit of a pain in the butt to remove all the ones I did not want after a rediscover.

With that being said, the previous skill worked almost perfectly every time.  It was as stable as my own lambda function using the code work from Martin as the foundation. (Thanks again for that, what a good guy)  This revision of the skill on the other hand at this point seems to be spotty.  I checked it when I fixed it this am, and it worked.  I used it from my office just after that with no luck.  Alexa confirmed the command with OK, but nothing happened.  I repeated the command a few more times and she finally told me something to the effect of the "hub" was not connected.  I just tried it again and now it seems to be functioning.  I don't know if the spotty function has something to do with the corrective action that were taken, or if there is something going on with the implementation.  I do know the problem is not with the units and the connection locally.

Not skill related but I can agree with what Aaron posted about the way this was handled.  Vera, I really have no idea how you can operate like this.  I watched the responses from Vlad saying people were using the wrong links, bad links, and to use the links here.  They did not work, and after people pointed that out, radio silence.  That is really not the right way to handle reports of a problem.  There was never even a hint of Vera saying to themselves "Hey guys, we might have a problem going on here".

I realize no one is exactly running a loved ones life support systems on Vera Zwave, and I do further realize this is a beta.  I have been using my Vera's for quite some time to automate entry/exit, alarm alert functions, text/email/push notifications, and basic TOD functions.  Yes I have workarounds I use and that is fine with me for select issues.  That is part of working with any product/platform.  Vera has been stable, fast, and for the most part trouble free for me once a level of function was established.  I do not do any update unless it is for something I really want or need.  I really do like the stuff, but I do not like the overall development side of Vera.

We are not all experts, but we are all not idiots either.  There are two things keeping me on Vera, VeraMate and other plugins from contributors.  The idea that keeping a customer is reliant on third parties should tell you something.

I think all we want comes down to two simple things.  Listen to us if you expect us to beta test and keep the ones who are testing in the loop.

Edit 1:  As I posted this, it is not responding again.  When this happens if you follow the link to make a device adjustment, the plugin update fails.  So Alexa is not talking to Vera when this happens.
Edit 2:  When this occurs the controller is also marked off line by the Vera portal.  The controller is not offline and does respond to remote commands from Vera mate. while on the local network if that helps Vera out at all.  Looking at the dashboard on home.getvera.com it shows the Vera 3 is online and the Vera Plus is not.  Again, not the case it is online and has a internet connection as reported by the unit itself.

Thanks Vlad, that solved it. Although for some weird reason, the 1st time I clicked the US link it took me to Amazon rather than Getvera. The second click brought up Getvera. I'm at work on a computer I have not used for this before so I am sure it's not cookies or history.

I guess I will stay out and just recommend using the ha-bridge for now... Lack of flexibility and reliability is keeping me away.
"Classic Vera" but it is in beta. I really wish it brought some additional functionality compared to a hue bridge but it actually has less and is slower.

Welllll, the Alexa skill installed on my attempt at 12:45 EST.  I'll have to get home to see if it's working.

As an aside, I am not receiving any emails regarding new skills.  I rechecked my Beta enrollment and it's still there.  What gives, Vera guys?

With this link, I was able to get my Alexa integration working again. The "Update Skill" link in my email from Vera resulted in a blank web page with only a {"message":null} error. After disabling the skill on my Alexa app, I used the following link to update my devices with Alexa. All of my previous selections and custom names were still there, and after clicking on "Done" at the bottom of the page, It worked for me once again! Thanks for the link!

Stuff breaks, I get it, however... one really important part of building trust is having good communication. We receive an E-mail that has a link that doesn't work, that E-mail also references a website that has a link that doesn't work. Now there is a new link that works (thanks for this!) yet there is no new E-mail with the updated link, and nobody updated the website version of the E-mail. Both of these are simple things to do. If you want to stop confusion, frustration, and aid your support people... "Get the fix to the people", don't make them search for a fix on the second page of a forum.

BTW... MCV I Love my Veras over the years, love the new Alexa beta, I just don't love your communication or lack there of. :-)

I found in some cases I had to do up to 15 discoveries and then I got my devices. MCV has stated that there is a small 8 second window I think to get all devices. Your Hue is bridged into Vera? So that might be why you get that or perhaps you are using the Hue skill?

I just got my new beta to work. I had to retry plugin installation about 6 times then it worked. After that my discovery worked quickly and then back to delays activating devices.

So good luck but in my opinion the original beta was far superior in performance to this new one.

My previously checked 34 devices/scenes of probably 70+ were discovered.  Here's what worked for me.
(1) Login to Alexa [wound up here: http://alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html#smart-home].
(2) Pull the  power on my Vera [ie reboot].
(3) I also opened a webpage to my vera at its local ip address on my network.] address to Vera

(4) Then click the new link we got.
(5) Check off or verify checked off devices presented by Vera link.
(6) Click finish and it installs the skill on Alexa, then
(7) under "Your devices" click discover devices.  All of mine are found including Nest.
I don't know that my bold items make a difference, but after initial issues this reboot thing seems to help.

I wish the bug hadn't happened, but I do appreciate Vera team getting the patch out so quickly after it was discovered.  I don't think my wife even noticed.  Thanks. :)

UK user.

I installed the fix yesterday & it installed the US Beta plugin (both on completion & in Alexa website). However it worked fine.

This morning's mail I ran the update & it installed the new plugin. My Alexa page now showed 2 plugins & it didn't work.

Removed both plugins forgot devices, rediscovered & I'm happily yelling at my lights again.

Guys remember its a BETA!

Vlad maybe its worth creating a closed beta testing program. I bet some of the users would be willing & very able to test X new functions in exchange for free hardware/services (3 new functions=1 free Edge for example)  or accreditation that way when Vera muck up its in a private forum with people who have a spare Vera to test on. They drive the development so they get features they need. You can publicly consult on the design. Their customers know that Vera rate them as knowledgeable when they see the "I've really Got Vera" logo.

Everyone else gets a properly tested release that works first time.

3/12/2017 since this AM - I unpaired a device from one controller and paired it to another. Verified recognized, communicating and working. Since Alexa knew about it I went to the vera side to update the skill. Confirmed the device is gone from the old controller and selectable (now selected) on the new controller. The Vera servers re-installed the plugin on both controllers successfully. However, I am getting the below error from https://pitangui.amazon.com/spa/skill/account-linking-status.html?success=false

Amazon Alexa

Unable to link your skill
Please try again later

Based on the link this seems to be on Amazon's side. I disabled the duplicate skills created by the 3/9 update (which was successful) and tried again a few times over the last few hours. I keep on getting above error. I checked DownDetector and sure enough, AWS has a large yellow blob on their EAST area again...

Hi guys,

Before installing the new skill, make sure you are already logged into alexa.amazon.com, navigate to Home Automation and remove any Vera existing skills. THen also forget all devices and groups.

After you've done all of this, you can go ahead and use hotfix links.

Amazon would have terminated and kicked users out of the previous skill anyway. Make sure you always run the latest iteration of skill.

I can get everything to install, the devices show up on http://alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html#smart-home

But when I use a voice command, all I hear is:

"Sorry, I couldn't find a device or group named "DEVICE NAME" in Kade's account"

I've gone through this multiple times and always get the same result.

After clicking the link and installing the skill, make sure you run Discover Devices from the Alexa app/web page.

All-

The new skill works well but during peak times of the day I get "device failed to respond" and 2-4 seconds later the device does respond. I guess the Amazon 8 second rule applies. If the device doesn't reply in 8 seconds or less Amazon assumes it's not going to work. If I run the command for Alexa early in the morning or late at night the command finishes correctly.

  Anyone else have this problem?

After clicking the link and installing the skill, make sure you run Discover Devices from the Alexa app/web page.

Yep, only on the new skill. The old one was rock solid and fast.

I experience the same thing here in Norway from time to time. In addition my command to set the house in Home mode sometimes only partial run. It stops after the first couple of lights is turned on, but the controller is still in Night mode.

Yup. I used to get this on the old skill as well, but the newest version of the skill seems to have this occur more frequently.

I find wireless & Internet quality affects the speed. I am assuming the running led's is when its talking to Amazon & Vera.

I have a Dot in the Kitchen which is on the other side of a thick wall as far as the Router is considered. Moving it around has helped.

My experiences of late, this was my first time setting up Echo and install the VERA plugin with associated Skills;

I finally was successful in get the skills defined but I seem to have a little trouble getting the app and helper file to download properly on to my Vera without an error messages (I notice it whilst watch my Vera status at the top of page). It would download the app but I would get error downloading the Alexa Helper file, after three or four times of it trying to download (by its self) it finally downloaded however the Vera Plugin Installation page indicated "failed" even when I depressed the "Retry" button (bottom of Panel). Once my Vera indicated that it down loaded the plugin satisfactory (no messages) I again depressed the "Retry" button and was finally presented with "Finish" button.

I then went to the Amazon Alexa home page under the "Smart Home" tab I noticed that I now have "Vera Smarter Home Control (BETA US)" being displayed under the "Your Smart Home Skills" and after selection "Discover Devices" under the "Your Devices" it was successful in detecting both my Vera devices and scenes that selected whilst in the Vera Plugin Installation Skills. I noticed that it doesn't like hyphenations or pound symbols in the names.

I too have notice that when I ask Alexa to turn ON/OFF any of the Vera devices I'm presented with "Sorry, Light device is not responding" message then 7-8 seconds later the action is performed (light comes ON or OFF). Is this normally or is there something I need to do?

Also why doesn't the Alex Helper App create a device that one can see in their device(s)?

Question to the Beta users, I'm getting the sense that some folks are not getting the "Sorry, Device X is not responding" message followed with a 7-42 second delay with the action finally initializes (e.g. device comes ON or OFF ect.) is that true and if so what in your environment such as; connection speed(s) is there difference based on time of day ect. may be contributing to it?

Question to VERA beta development team are you aware and is there anything the user community can do to help minimizing the delay and when are you envisioning an update?

For the beta users, I experience this at random times. Since the new beta it was more frequent a month or two ago but has since normalized and doesn't occur that often. Vera dev says there's an 8 second requirement from Amazon so when discovering devices or performing an action if not in this window Alexa says not responding but the action can still execute after the fact. No one has stated if this is attributed to Vera's API/speed/interface or Amazon's system that I am aware of. I have the usual Xfinity setup with plenty of bandwidth at all times. The original beta was still far superior in performance in my opinion however you'll find dozens of other's that claim it was worse. Without seeing diagnostics or logging which isn't capture on the Vera I can't see what the delay was. I believe it's Vera's system limitations to Amazon personally.

@tomcom, many thanxs for the comeback. I unfortunately have Satellite connection 12.6 Mb/sec down load and 3.6 Mb/sec upload (price for living in the country) but looking as how fast Alexa is responding (less than few seconds) I'm incline to agree with you that it might be Vera system limitation. It would be nice if when one releases Beta version that known issues are also relayed... I notice that from the time I give Alexa a command it takes 8 seconds to get the error message and then another 36 seconds for the action to execute.

I clicked the link on the first page, signed in and got the list of devices.  When I click the 'finish' button I get the 'plugin installation' screen but it always fails.  I've retried many, many times.
I saw the post about this happening to some else until they tried it with only a few of their devices checked so I turned off all but two and it still fails.
I did have this installed when it first came out but I deleted it to go back to the version by martin12345 which Amazon is going to turn off tonight.
Any ideas what to try?

Got this response from Vera support today and I thought I'd share it.  Perhaps it will help someone else with a simular problem.
My Alexa skill is working now but I don't know if they fixed something on their side or it just got better.   :)
I also noticed the new skill no longer shows 'beta' in its title.   :o

Thank you for contacting Vera Customer Care Support!

I?ve just tested this in the office and was able to connect Amazon Echo with Vera successfully. Please, on an incognito window, login to your Amazon Alexa account > go to Smart Home > and Disable the Vera Smarter Home Control skill > then click on Forget all devices and groups as well in order to start fresh, only in case you see those options. Then copy/paste the invite link bellow on a new incognito tab and follow the instructions, please make sure that yo do not select scenes that contain security devices like door locks, motion sensors, door sensors, etc. If the plugin installation fails, please give it a few attempts, if possible please use an incognito/private window on your web browser to avoid cache issues.

Also do you still get the 8 second error message "Sorry Device X is not responding" followed up several seconds later with action executed?

It was probably today's UK interruption in their data center. Sign up for alerts on https://status.getvera.com/. That way you would get the email and know before deleting the skill.

I am having the same problem as Isablend.

My Alexa / Vera setup was working fine, but I bought a  new Vera Plus and when I migrated had to delete the working Alexa skill to link it to the Vera Plus and since then I can't get it to work.

First was the broken UK link. Now that the link is working again, I get the error message "Unable to link your Skill. Please try again later."

Any ideas of what is wrong?

Very odd. I was using the UK link and it was coming up with the error message"Unable to link your Skill".

I tried the US link, which was not able to connect.

And then tried the UK link again, which worked. All devices now discovered.

I solved this problem (at least with my hue lights "timing out") by first adding the Hue Lights via the Hue 2 plugin in Vera's web interface, naming them appropriately, placing them where I wanted them in Vera rooms (I like to group lights as "rooms", even if they are in the same room, so my PC Hue lights get their own room, while my TV Hue lights get another room), and making sure I could control them manually from the Vera web portal. I then linked the Vera to Alexa Beta, gave appropriate aliases, installed and linked plugins, etc, then hit discover in the Alexa App so it would find all the Vera controlled z-wave and hue products, but did NOT hit the hue bridge button. I then hit discover a second time, this time hitting the button on my Hue bridge, which effectively doubled the number of Hue lights found, but allowed me to then associate the hue lights without Vera with a group, so that Alexa responds and turns the lights in the affected groups on almost immediately. No more timeouts (so far), but still able to control via both Alexa and Vera, with room for adding an alexa+vera grouping for each group so that the commands pass through Vera should I need to (for redundancy if nothing else).

Weirdly, ever since a power spike, I can turn on the bedroom lights with Alexa, but she only turns on the Vera associated lights and not the Hue lights. I don't know if it's an old Hue bridge (V1) problem or what, but even though I grouped bedroom lights with a mixture of Vera-controlled and Hue-controlled lights, only the Vera-controlled lights come on with the command, "Alexa, Turn on Bedroom Lights". I tried re-grouping all the Vera-connected lights and get the time-out error but they all turn on. But if I try to pair Vera-controlled lights with Hue-only controlled lights, Alexa only turns on the Vera lights and ignores the hue lights altogether now, or vice versa.

With version 7.0.20 everything was working perfectly.  Then my Vera Plus updated to version 7.0.21.  Now the Vera Alexa Skill is broken, the "Turn On" command to be precise.  "Turn Off" works just fine.  "Turn On" seems to work for dimmer switches only, but it turns them on at there lowest power setting.

Tired disabling the skill and forgetting all devices and re-enabling it and discovered devices and still no luck.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

For the guys having problems with the turn on command (especially for dimmers): could you please try to trigger a manual upgrade for the "Alexa helper" plugin?

Steps to do that are:
Apps -> My Apps -> Alexa Helper -> Update App

It seems that due to the high load, most plugin updates was not done on time and this causes the "1%" problem.
As Vera now supports setting dimmers to the previous level of the device, the plugin should have been updated, as this is a backwards compatibility limitation.
E.g. I set the a bulb to 70%, turn off, then on turn on, the light will go to the last value (e.g. 70% in this case) instead of going to full brightness.
The plugin is also set to update itself based on a 24h check, but updating it manually should speed up the process.

I followed the same advice John M. provided and it fixed my issue of my z-wave connected devices not being able to turn on or were turned on at 1%.

I found Alexa has new features now like "turn on device xxx at 50%" and it can tell me the temperature reading of my z-wave connected thermostat. Pretty cool.

Searched official alexa command list but it doesn't mention setting the thermostat mode to heating/cooling.

things i've tried
"set thermostat to cool/ to cooling /  to A/C."
"set thermosat mode to cool/ to cooling" / to A/C"

thanks

It requires a small change to the virtual device file itself, but it's possible. I don't have the changes handy, but someone actually uploaded a file that handles it for you. Search the Alexa messages. If you don't find it, I'll look for it tonight. I'm headed to work in a few...

I read the first couple of pages and the last page of this thread.

So I've installed the alexa assistant and added the devices to alexa.

Where do I get the alexa skill to make it work? I spoke too soon. It showed up in the Smart Home Tab in the Alexa App. and all my devices and scenes are there (well most of them).

By most of them, some devices and scenes were said to be incompatible, mainly cameras from the Blue Iris PlugIn.

Do I need to sign up for the beta or am I in by following the instructions on page 1 of this thread?

It would be nice to see Vera in this list:

So is this known to cause issues with access through home.getvera.com? I cannot access by controler through relay but can connect to it by opening up an RDP session and logging into my local network. If I try to connect by logging in to the local machine I get the "Controller Not Available" screen even though it was just available via its local IP address.

Installing Alexa Helper and updating the app did the trick.
By the way, can i call scenes with this technique?
I have created a scene that triggers two different light switches, that has dimmer bulbs 5 bulbs each, total of 10 bulbs. I would like to call out, "turn the lights on to 50%, or Turn the lights on to 100%, this way the lights should turn on to the desired settings for both the light switches, thus turning on all the 5 bulbs on each switches.

Reloading Lua didn't fix this issue but I was able to give the VeraPlus a kick in the pants this morning by power cycling it and now I can log in remotely and use the app.

Alexa is responding to commands now and not saying there's an issue with the hub most of the time. One thing, I have several "macros" (I call them one-touch controls) using Virtual Panel Plugin and Alexa will execute them to turn on the macro, which is basically a scene, but will not turn off the macro, which is basically another scene that reverses what the previous scene does. Also, Vera will not show that the macro has executed.

This leads me to believe that Alexa actually executed the scene "Pool Heat On" for example, rather than the macro. For whatever reason, it choked on executing the "Pool Heat Off" scene, which basically reverses the "On" scene.

Is anyone else seeing issues like this? Should I open a ticket with MiCasaVerde or are they monitoring this thread as they are the ones that started it?

I still need help with this.
I have created a scene manually, named it "Good Night". For this scene, i am shutting down all the lights of the house with this one click Good Night.
Now when i call out "Alexa, turn on Good Night", it doesnt work, and in response alexa repsonds, "sorry i didnt find good night".
Everything else works good, if i try to turn on and off a single individual light through alexa, but still trying to make scenes work.

Please guide.

Did you click "Discover" again in the Alexa App or Web GUI (alexa.amazon.com)?

Thanks for your replies Sammy, I have clicked Discover both through WebUI and through the app on the phone several times, and i do not see those newly created scenes showing up. It just shows 19 scenes before and after. The good night scene, or any other scene that i have created do not show up.
Although if i call on alexa to trigger a device directly, it works jut fine, just that the scenes do not show up.

Did you actually go to the plugin registration and put a check mark next to your scene to make it visible to Alexa?

Hi,

I took a different approach. Within the Alexa app i created a group. In this group (name: "all living room lights") i put all the lights that i want to turn off in 1 time. So now i can say to Alexa: turn off "all living room lights". Works perfectly and for me this a more natural approach then "turning on" a scene resulting in "turning off" lights

Look also under devices in Alexa. Some scenes actually show up as devices. I've noticed this for my insteon fanlincs for which I've given up on controlling with Vera and the USB Power Line Modem and am setting up to control with Alexa using a cheap Insteon hub harvested from one of their kits and sold on amazon.

This grouping concept looks promising for all the reasons stated above but for these same fans of which there are three in one group and two in another in my backyard patio and gazebo by the pool respectively.

The beta skill install process went without a hitch for me, and it discovered my Yale YRD220 zwave lock first time. I can check it's state and lock it with "Alexa, is the front door locked" and "Alexa lock the front door".

Initially she kept saying there were multiple matching devices, which one? I'd say "the front door" and then it would usually work. I finally realised why: the lock was called "front door lock" which made the commands a bit confusing. When I gave it a Custom Device Name"Front Door" in the Vera Alexa Setup screen it works perfectly.

So don't call your lock "lock" as it will cause Alexa to get confused between the noun and the verb.

I tried updating my settings today, and I get the message "Plugin installation" "We are installing the required plugin on the controllers below. This can take up to 30 seconds. Please wait...", and then it always ends in Failed. I hit retry, and no matter how many times, it fails. Any tips?

And now everything is working again. Looks like there were vera changes on the back end (perhaps related to the firmware update yesterday) which temporarily broke everything, and now it's fixed.

I have done the reboot, Discovery, and restarted the program and still nothing. I even rebooted one of the Alexa's and she can't seem to find the Vera or the Nest. Thanks for the help

We are looking into this. The outage seems to be related to the Amazon servers but this is still under investigation.

This is not related in any way to yesterday's firmware release, so downgrading will not resolve it. Other measures like rediscovering devices will still not resolve this.

Please wait for our updates on the social media channels ,as this will be resolved server side without any input from user side.

As always, should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email us at support@getvera.com.

Thanks for the update John M. Saves me from tearing me hair out when I get home trying to figure out that response.

I'll try the Ooma skill when I get home to see if that is affected or not.

Checking Downdetector.com and looking at the comments, it doesn't look the Vera skill is alone in having issues.

As far as I know from the Alexa integration team, once we have a full assessment of the situation a broadcast email message will be sent to Alexa customers.

Just to throw in something I noticed today. Logging in on the site under "Control" and hitting "Manage Alexa" behaves ALMOST like the provided links with one big exception, it doesn't install the plugin. Might I suggest that if hitting finish on that page performed the plugin installation nobody would need to hunt for links on forums and old emails anymore...

Yep, very disappointing.  I've been a Vera user AND supporter for a long time.  Recently went from a HA user to a partner in a HA company, and had to reluctantly choose another hub to standardize on, since Alexa & voice is an important component for us.  This has been beta, with limited functionality and uninstallable by a non-tech customer, for way too long.  We've moved to the Smartthings hub for customer installs, and I may finally remove my own Vera and put a Smartthings hub in at home today.   :(

Hi

I just updated my VeraEdge to firmware version 1.7.3014 and its installed two new plug-ins and I am not sure why?

1. Amazon Alexa Helper
2. Sercomm IP Camera

I did try the Alexa beta ages ago but as it wasn't working for UK users then, I instead went down the HA-Bridge Java software route, to integrate Vera with Alexa.

And as for the Sercomm IP Camera plug-in I have no idea why that has appeared.

I haven't been following the news on the Vera / Alexa beta how is it progressing ?

I am assuming I will at some point, stop using the HA-Bridge and use Vera's native Alexa integration.

Thanks

Multiple people have reported this and the fact they are unable to delete them. Alexa-helper may or may not have become a standard part of the firmware. As for Sercomm I wonder if that has something to do with the camera cloud storage that GetVera now offers...

John M may have the definitive answer for that.

Update: Since I also still could not use my Ooma skill this AM, I believe the broken skill issue is on the Amazon side rather then the Getvera side.

I'm curious what the issue turns out to be.  I mean lets face it, it is not the end of the world when Alexa does not work.  I know that I came to rely on it much more than I realized, and while I guess that is a good thing from an acceptance factor, it's a bad thing when it goes down for a duration like this.

It would seem to me if something could be down for this long there is something to be said in the stability of the implementation, providing this does not turn out to be an actual Amazon problem.  I have not found anything else that does not work on Alexa.  I know Vera stated it has nothing to do with the firmware update, but it sure is odd that this all started when the Alexa app became part of the firmware installed by default (from what I read).  It is also pretty interesting that the Alex system can still pull in the devices, but just not control them.

I used to run the code from Martin on my own lambda space (worked very well overall), and I think I would prefer to go back to doing something like that.  Is anyone still running on their own AWS space or did everyone move to the included skill from Vera?

I like being in control of my own services because then at least I can take some sort of action.

I too ran Martins code but I kept getting emails from amazon stating they would no longer support the Node.js v0.10 implementation and required it be changed to node.js 4.3.   Unless you change the implementation to 4.3 I doubt it would work any longer - at least that is what amazon stated in about a million emails to me :)

I don't think the update was involved unless something got broken in the back end at Vera when they were developing the update. The reason for my thinking on this is that I was having issues with Alexa as reported a full two days before I installed the update.

Is this something other than HA Bridge?

Should I move to HA Bridge? My PC's are on as IP Camera DVR's and Media Servers all the time anyhow so leaving them on is not a big deal for me.

Sammy2 - one method to connect to Alexa prior to vera coming out with their integrated plugin was discussed at the following link:    http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,34527.705.html

Again I doubt it works now because of the node.js .10 depreciation but I don't really know.  I moved off it once vera released the beta.   Martins code really worked well without issue.    I'm sure the vera incorporated Alexa integration will be back shortly but will wait and see.

Update - The team at Amazon is continuing diagnostics on their end, but has found nothing conclusive thus far. Their current ETA for an update, and or, remediation is Monday morning (PT), at the earliest. We understand the impact of this extended outage and will continue to pursue escalation.

considering the vera skill is still in 'beta' and not production, I can see Amazon giving it a lower priority. Not happy with it, but I can see.

That has no node 0.1 requirement. It uses node 4.3.

But when you give false updates then you've severely compromised your reputation and no amount of money or whatever is going to get that back.    I mean come on already!! -----EDITED Yeah.... i'm venting and this is towards Amazon not Vera. >:( >:( >:(

Mod edit: I totally understand frustration but please keep it kids friendly. No one is lying, not Amazon not Vera. As explained in today's update, it was a joint operation Amazon/Vera to have this sorted in the fastest manner possible. The biggest disappointment that affects us as well, is that the customer is the most affected in such a situation. Thank you for understanding.

New Incident Status: Monitoring

The MiOS and Amazon engineering teams worked collaboratively throughout the day yesterday to conduct additional diagnostics and testing to properly address this issue.

Amazon is deploying a server-side update this morning to correct the issue and restore service.

This change will take up to 48 hours to propagate completely throughout their production environments, worldwide.

We will continue to monitor this incident until we see traffic and performance return to normal for all users.

Again, please accept our sincerest apologize for this extended delay. We will issue a comprehensive postmortem in the coming days that details the root causes, as well as the procedures Amazon, MiOS, and Vera are putting in place to ensure an outage of this duration does not take place again in the future.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.

I didn't receive any instructions in the email I just got. I guess that means we need to un-install and re-install the skill as stated in the announcement.

I disabled the beta skill and then when I went to search for it tor re-enable it it didn't show up in on alexa.amazon.com but when I logged back into Vera, it would let me to the dashboard until I Clicked "Finish" on the bottom of the enabled devices page. Only then did the Vera Skill show up on alexa.amazon.com. Come on GetVera! You owe us detailed instructions on how to do this as what was in the announcement is not actually what is required of the end user to get it back up.

Email received: ACTION REQUIRED: Amazon Alexa Beta Service Restoration

I received the aforementioned email this morning with clear instructions on how to login, disable the old skill, and a hyperlink to the skill authorization page.  My Alexa commands are now working with my Vera devices again.

Yeah, gmail sorted it into promotions instead of updates. I found it later. I sorta stumbled into a solution though from the other information I had. I disabled the skill in Alexa, went to the first page in this post, clicked the appropriate beta skill link address, went to home.getvera.com and logged in whereupon I was presented with the amazon alexa devices to enable page. I scrolled down, clicked Finish at the bottom of the page then re-loaded home.getvera.com and went to my dashboard. I haven't been able to confirm it works yet as I am at work right now but it will be about the first thing I do when I get home after kissing my wife and kicking the dog.. Either that or I will have my wife check it out this afternoon.

You must mean kiss the dog and kick the wife. Otherwise I'll be forced to report you to animal services.... 8)

Disabled skill, ran the Vera side and ran discovery on the Amazon side. It looks good. I'll find out when I get home after I pet the dogs and kick Alexa if she still behaves like a beatch. :)

Update: Got home and Alexa is back to her usual helpful self.

Unfortunately when I followed the instructions in both emails received today, both resulted in:

Unable to link your Skill.

Please try again later.

Any ideas?

Are you in the UK? If so, follow the American link which will fail and then try the UK link again.

Everything worked for me after relinking the skill.  The first email I got from Vera had no link with the text, but that could be my mail client.  Used the link on the top of this thread and everything came back fine.

Much better.. I'll pet the dogs, kiss the wife and kick Alexa if she continues to act up!

I went into Amazon Alexa skills and disabled Vera skill.  I then clicked on enable skill at the same screen w/o exiting.  It brought me to the Vera screen where you select devices to include.  I reviewed checked devices [same as before issues], changed nothing, and clicked finish.  Exited that page and went back to the still open page for Alexa.  Clicked on discover devices, no changes, and done.  It all works.  I am back on the old firmware.  My system had other issues that were incompatible with the current firmware; we'll see if they get resolved in the next release.

Hi,

I upgraded my veralite to UI7, instaled amazon beta and it's working well alexa with vera.
All my setting went ok to UI7.

Problem:  I have scenes on vera that control Harmony Hub with command os.execute(Harmonyhub ......)
These commands are not working any more.  Why?

Thanks, that appears to have sorted it!

John M, where is the post mortem on the week Alexa outage? Just want to know to close the loop in my brain...

There is still no "Post Mortem" posting of what the causes were and what's been done to prevent this in the future.

Hoping to close the loop on it too but am thinking that we'll never be privy to the information.

I get that sometimes on one of my Vera's. A hard reboot of that Vera resolves the issue. It's a Vera 3 that had to be rolled back to factory reset a few times and then restored to get firmware updates to install. I think it's gotten glitchy and am in the process of migrating devices off it to my Vera Plus. Neither the Plus nor the Edge cause this error with Alexa...

The Vera skill for Alexa is released! No problems installing and all well.

Congratulations to the team for what seems to have been a long and complicated journey!
