Title: Best iOS and Android Apps for Vera remote control?
Post by: Abscam on April 07, 2012, 07:40:17 pm
Hi;

Which of the Apps has proved to be the better choice to use on iOS and Android?  I've got my Vera on order, comes Tuesday and then I'll setup the house and want to setup mobile access.  Thanks!

Make a vote here perhaps?

I don't have android, but for iOS it has to SQremote for flexibility, and the only real choice if you want to throw AV control into the mix!

Automator.app for iOS works very well for me. The support for the Automator.app seems very solid as well.

If you are using Android AutHomation, Home Buddy, and Vera Mobile are all free so you might as well try all of them. Both @rakstar (Home Buddy) and @garrettwp (AutHomation) seem very response to requests to add support for new devices, etc.

Vera Mobile just showed up recently in the app store with very little fanfare. I think it is an official micasaverde app. One feature that Vera Mobile has that I don't think is present in the other two is recording new scenes.

The the interfaces are fairly different between the various apps. Vera Mobile doesn't break down devices by room, just type. It provides a list of rooms, but I'm not really sure why. It lets you create new scenes where the other two programs don't. Home Buddy provides a typical Android list view of either devices or scenes by room. This makes it easy to control a lot of devices sequentially. AutHomation has a very nice UI that is a bit more customized. For devices it doesn't know about (mostly user developed plugins) there is an option to show extra information which is useful.

I just threw in the towel on iVera and bought Automator because it is still being actively developed.  Excellent choice - it blows iVera away!   ;D

Automator app supports push notification on iOS devices which is really cool. But the GUI is not so great.

Definitely Automator.app.... Its also only half the price of iVera I believe!

Another vote for automator.app here.  Use it every day, and the push notifications are great  :)

I use AutHomation for android, than again I am also the developer of the app. I have used in the past ivera, automator.app and sqremote. Automator.app for the iOS platform wins with sqremote coming in second.

In order of frequency of usage:
a) SQRemote on iPhone (Home Control only)
b) SQRemoteHQ on iPad (Home & AV Control)
c) AutHomation on GoogleTV
d) Automator.app for Testing Alarm Plugin extensions

The SQRemote stuff takes a little longer to get setup, but once you do it's hard to go back.  I have customized panels/layout for Power Monitoring, Alarm Monitoring/Management, AV Gear and Home Control...

Disclaimer: I'm a Beta tester for SQRemote, but I still pay for each release ;-)

I agree with guessed; SQRemote takes time to set up well, but it's worth it.  You'll end up with an interface tailored to your particular needs.

Still, none of the current apps meet my needs, so I've started developing my own :)  I want something that looks and functions somewhat like a remote control or a wall mounted control panel: easy enough to use to trust your (grand)mother with it: the true test of any interface :)  The current crop of Vera apps seem to be aimed at the administrators of the Vera network rather than the end users.

I do use iVera a lot, for a quick swipe to check the status of all the Lights, for example. It appears that iVera loads the config faster than Automator.app, in my case.

I tried all the free ones out I could find on my Android tablet & phone and Home Buddy: http://sites.google.com/site/rakstar/homebuddy (http://sites.google.com/site/rakstar/homebuddy) was the nicest.  I like the direct shortcuts you can place on the 'desktop', and the layout was less cluttered.  Also the buttons aren't pressed accidentally when scrolling like in ivera & authomation.

For IOS environment.......SQ Remote HD (little tricky at the beginning for configuring...once you got it right, you're in business )
For Android environment......AutHomation (nice UI, quick and easy set up, smooth and great support from the developer)

Currently using below free apps (I believe $30 for iVera is too high):

VeraMobile for my iPhone.
HomeBuddy on a 7" Android 2.2 tablet.

Just downloaded AuthomationHD to my HP Touchpad running CM( (ICS) and ran it. One word: WOW!!!!
I'll try remote mode tomorrrow from work.

Authomation seems to run pretty well as well on the 7" tab...

Title: Vera lite paired with the Schlage FE599
Post by: kenVera on September 12, 2012, 12:53:10 pm
Great system. First time I have used anything like this so it took some experimenting. What I did was put the lock together and get it working manually on my desk. Then I set up the Veralite unit. Put both on my desk so they would pair. Then print the page that has instructions for the Schlage lock. Then on my Samsung S2, download the Vera Mobile android app and install. That will put an icon on your cell. Open it. Select Cameras/Security. Click the lock tab. If your lock is locked, you will see an icon showing an unlocked device. Press it and in a few seconds, your lock will unlock and will stay unlocked. The icon on your cell will show a locked device. Press it and in a few seconds, your lock will lock. First time success. I recommend it. I want to add a camera and some other stuff, but for now this is great. I can give a code to some people doing work on my home before I move in. Or I can simply open the door for them while they are calling. All this for less than $400. I thought that was a lot, but as I use it, it was worth it.

For iOS
1) Automator.app - this is the easiest to get up and running right away. For the comments on to much on the screen, I select the devices I use all the time and make them favorites so the favorites tab has everything I need. As your network starts getting larger I can see this becoming an issue but it also lets you break things up to rooms which would be the equivalent of panels on SQRemote or the way iVera does it. This is also a universal app that works on both iPhone and iPad - Huge Plus. One recommendation to the developer is to use iCloud or something to back up the config so I don't have to make changes to all my devices each time..

2) HomeWave - waiting for this app to work on the iPad, but it looks very promising.

3) SQRemote - I want to like this app so much but you have to come up with each panel and add every single device through a lot of clicking, searching and aligning. The main problem I have for this app is I want an overview page where I can see my statuses plus all cameras and there is no way to see more than one camera at a time with this app which is a deal killer for me. Also the refresh rate on the camera using the Vera plugin is horrible, 1 pic every 5 seconds. I still keep waiting for an update though because like I said I really want to like this app because of the customization options. The developer needs to make the design part of this much simpler though like HomeWave does.

@tiwas: try control cube.
The apps Website is www.control-cube.com
The cool thing about the app is it has awesome graphics and barely takes a minute to set up. Plus if you have Sonos at home it integrates with sonos directly

Looks good from the preview. I was planning to use a cheap Android device instead of an iPad for the wall controls, but might have to test out this thing and look for a cheap iPad2 or something.

I have been looking for decent looking GUIs for a while now, so far I have been mostly decided on AuthomationHD for Android, but not completely convinced.

@GC: Thanks for the feedback. I look forward to hearing your input on usability and features after you test it.

If you plan to invest in a couple of Sonos or GC devices as well. you will find Control Cube to be invaluable because it's the only app that can integrate with these devices smoothly out of the box.

By the way, I am currently working on the iPhone app. Should be out in about 1-2 weeks.

Question, I use Authomation for Android which in my opinion is the best app on any device. Thanks Garrett! It seems to support everything I have in the home. (ELK alarm, Squeezebox, Netatmo, Hue) all thru Vera plug-ins and works solidly. One of the best features of this app seems to be missing in all IOS apps unless I'm missing it somewhere. That's the ability to have a device on your homescreen like an Android widget. Is this possible to have these widgets or shortcuts? Does ControlCube or HomeWave have this feature? I don't want to keep buying apps that don't have this feature...  :)  The reason I'm shopping for this is I have an overhead door in our warehouse that is on z-Wave that I need to put on other users iPhones... Thanks for your help!

Vera can control any device via a HTTP get, so once you know the device that you want to control from the home scene (iOS), then its as simple as creating a home screen shortcut/URL from within safari.

You can find the URL you need by going to:

http://VERAIP:3480/data_request?id=lu_invoke

The above is for when you have LAN access, however so long as you know the Fwd server your vera is attached too, and the username password, then it is possible also to do it remotely too.

No app required for the above at all!  8)

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view :) ), Apple does not allow active widgets on the home screen.

However, for apps that register a URL scheme to perform certain actions like flipping lights, it is possible to add icons to the home screen to perform those actions.  This works through Safari, and it's a somewhat ugly hack.

iViri is an iOS app that people should check out for its implementation of geofences and voice control, both of which are things no other iOS app offers at the moment and definitely not for the same prices as iViri.

Disclaimer: I am the developer and a little biased but have used and purchased most listed here and think iViri is at least comparable outside the added features of geofencing and voice control.

You have to have a certain number of posts before the system lets you send a PM. THis is to avoid spammers coming in here and flooding the board with their crap. Same reason you have to enter the little exercises when you post. That too will go away after a certain number of posts.

not sure if anyone is monitoring this post anymore,,

I'm looking for a customizable app for vera where I can "place/move" a button anywhere over a background image.

such as a floor plan blueprint image where I can overlay any button anywhere accordingly, lights, locks, temp, exc..

i know open remote can do all this but it needs additional hardware to make it work. plus the designer software is $150.

any other options out there?
thanks

Of course you can test all the functionalities for one month. There is a one month trial with each InApp purchase, except for the multipage option you can buy once.
You have to go to your subscription on you iTunes account to cancel it before the last day of the trial period.
