Title: Hand Held Remote That Works With Vera
Post by: thewizardofoz on March 21, 2014, 04:04:53 pm
Does anybody have recommendations for hand held remotes that work well with Vera?

I know the Intermatic HA-07 and HA-09 work well.  The HA-07 is a little bulky and HA-09 only does 6 scenes.   Any remotes that will operate 12-20 scenes that will be reliable with Vera?  I am not really interested in AV remotes unless that is the only option.

Any help would be great thanks.

David

How about your smart phone!

I have Vera on my iPhone,  but I don't keep my iPhone up my butt when I am at the house.  I am looking for cheap remotes to have laying around the house at various points to ease in automation.

Plus with a remote, I just hit a button.  I don't have to slide my lock scree and enter a code and then pull up the app and start it and then find the scene I want an select it.

I am looking for something similar too. I use my phone right now but my wife has told me hers is off limits and I gotta keep it functional for her as well as keep her happy. I want something that just works without a lot of hoops.

The MiniMote's from AeonLabs support 8 Scenes (4 press, 4 press-and-hold) and are very compact and rechargeable.  Whilst not supporting the 12-20 scenes as requested by the OP they do work very well with Vera.

I use one for start-of-day, end-of-day scenes, and it's located permanently in the Bedroom.  The challenge is that they don't have a lot of options for labeling the 4x buttons, so you tend to forget what each button does ;)

By far-and-away, I prefer using this to my iPhone control for start/end-of-day use.  It's simpler/quicker than the typical unlock-loadApp-navigate sequence for a phone app, especially when you're bleary-eyed.

Given it's in a fixed location, I haven't found myself needing more buttons - each is set to a scene targeted for that location, which keeps it simple to use.

I'll take a look at the MiniMote.  Do you have any issues with not holding the button long enough and getting the wrong scene to run?

My usage, is fairly simple.  I have the most common scenes on the "single-press" and rarely used, often counterpart "Off" stuff, on the "press-and-hold".

For me, they're set as:

a) Goodnight (press) and All-On (hold)
b) HotWater Pump On (press) and Off (hold)
c) Sonos On (press) and Off (hold)
d) spare

I rarely activate the "Off" options, since they naturally turn off as a result of some automated action (like leaving the house, or a period of being on)

I've most often use the Press-and-Hold for the Sonos, and I've never had a problem with it.

They are cheap but seem to work with Vera with some work.

Get a couple of budget Android tablets. Sit them on charging docks so they are always on and ready for use. Add AutHomation and set-up a few scene and device shortcuts with your choice of icons.

I have mine run DreamTime (screensaver) with a dim clock display so they are unobtrusive at night. It takes one touch to show the desktop and one more to select the scene/action icon.

If you have a Frys nearby, they have some 7 inch android tablets on sale today for 57 bucks. Not sure how good they are, but I noticed they have capacitive touch.

The Android might just be the ticket.

Thanks

What kind are you using and dock? I really like this idea and if cheap enough could use it as a clock at bedside as well.

Would like a 10 or 11" tablet...with a dock too.  Any suggestions?

You're also one button away from a weather forecast and a look at your diary.

The dock part was important to me. I wanted it to look good and allow easy mount/dismount. The top-dollar ones have wireless (inductive) charging but I didn't want to pay that much. It may be different where you are but I didn't find any really cheap tablets that met this criteria. It is, of course, possible to just use a stand and leave the charger plugged-in. Several promising tablets failed here because the designer had placed the USB socket on the bottom edge.  ::)

I bought some early-model Nexus 7's from eBay. They have charging contacts on the bottom edge that mate with pogos on the stand. They cost about 50% more than the budget tablets but they work so well I think they were worth it. YMMV.

Having a connector on the bottom of a cheap one sounds advantageous, and a nice excuse to get creative with some woodworking tools... with of course a nice piece of wood and a cable to make a custom stand!

I may just do this myself :)

I'm interested in your Sonos On? What does it do?  Start playing where you left off with the Sonos last time?  Or does it play a particular playlist?

Also-I imagine with some PLEG magic the same button press could toggle it on if it was off and off it it was on...

It's simply a call to "Play", done as an Advanced Scene.  That particular Sonos is used like an Clock Radio, so it's always tuned to the same Radio station.  It's also set to go off at a particular time, like a regular Alarm clock, but sometimes we get up earlier (etc) and just want to turn it on.

They're plain-old scenes, one is "Master-Sonos-On" and the other is "Master-Sonos-Off".  Easy stuff, nothing complex in these, but the Sonos (Connect AMP) is atop an armoire so this makes it easier.

I have a more full compliment of scenes on my iPad, iPhone and Nexus it's just that most of the time it's easier to grab the mini mote and "go" (esp without the glow they give off).

I often break out the native Sonos app at some point later, once my mind is in gear and the Mrs has woken 8)
