Title: How do I add Minimote?
Post by: pgrover516 on October 31, 2009, 06:07:30 pm
I want to use a minimote to activate scenes through Vera, I am able to add using "add zwave controller" in devices tab but when I craete a scene, choose the minimote, choose "a scene is activated" I do not have a choice of button number so I put 1 in the box "which scene number", I've tried readding controller, and configure node now, still have a red cogwheel next to the controller and cannot trigger scenes, would appreciate input from anyone using (or with knowlege of) this remote!

Ditto - I'm a little stuck.  I was able to add the minimote to Vera as a scene controller, but now am not sure how to actually make the buttons control scenes.

Did you try adding the minimote a second time?  With my Homesite bridge, I had to add it, then add it again to get it to work.  It's some spooky thing, but in the forum you'll see it's a common thread.

Yep, I've added it several times. It definitely gets found by Vera, but then I can't use it to do anything, and Vera constantly shows a red cog next to it.

I emailed MCV about this, when I asked if the minimote can run scenes they replied
"We haven't tried yet, but I think the answer is yes. If for now you didn't got it through, we will come up with the resolution. For now, we are working on fixing some other things and focus less on new features, but will be taken into account. I've noticed some general interest for this minimote from Aeon Labs on the forum"

So I am finally using my Minimote, but only as a device remote, not a scene controller.  And I had to add the devices to the remote manually, meaning carry it around and create scenes in the Minimote itself by including individual devices.  I was never able to get Vera to do anything with it, so it's acting independently now.  I guess that's OK, given the current use of the remote, but it would be nice to have Vera send my existing scenes to the Minimote, rather than my having to manually re-create them in the Minimote itself.

Looking forward to hopefully hearing something back from MCV on this.

I have tried the re-adding of the controller, and while it appears to work (lights flash according to the instructions and indicate data is being received), it doesn't configure the buttons with the scenes as I've setup in Vera.  If anyone out there has managed to get an existing Vera scene loaded into a Minimote, please tell me how you did it.

This may be a stupid question  to which I think I already know the answer, but when you add an event to a scene for the purpose of including it in a scene controller, you can add several events for several scene controllers to the same scene, correct?  That doesn't somehow create a problem, does it?  I'm asking because the scenes that I have tried to add to my minimote have already been added to a Leviton in-wall 4-scene controller (and they work fine with that controller).

Your experience reflects what others have reported, the minimote works if itself is used to add devices but no one has reported being able to run a Vera scene with it, I did my testing with a very simple scenario and I tried every method from every device I could find in the Wiki so I don't think the complexity of your scenes is a factor here, someone (maybe myhomeserver?) mentioned contacting Aeon labs for info but I havn't heard any feedback yet, I only bought mine to run scenes so it sits idle awaiting more info

Same issue for me, had to add all the devices manually and trying a scene in Vera and assigning it to a button on the remote just doesnt work!  I've asked Aeon Labs to ask Aaron at MCV how we can use this to control scenes.

No word back yet, I love this remote, so small but we need scene control with it!

I could get by with this workaround for now. So are you manually making "scenes" or just groups of devices? Can you add devices that are in your Vera network? I've only been able to make it work with devices that are not in my network. And can you control several devices with one button? Thanks for your help!
Title: Re: How do I add Minimote?

I am successfully controlling devices that are part of my Vera network, but I haven't tried to control multiple devices with a single button (i.e. a scene) on Minimote.  Just using it for single devices per button right now.

Thanks. I'll try it again since I need to have a remote lying around for those (rare) times when I don't have an iPhone in my hand.

Strange. I can include a Schlage lamp module on my minimote and control the lamp with either Vera or the minimote, but when I tried the same thing on a Leviton wall switch, the mini showed it as a successful include, but then neither the mini nor Vera could control it. Any ideas?
Title: Re: How do I add Minimote?

So I did some more playing with MiniMote and Vera and no matter what I cannot setup a scene in Vera and map a button on the minimote to trigger that scene.  But, I am using it as a secondary controller and it appears in Vera as one.  Here's how I did it. DO THIS IN ORDER, REVERSING will cause problems!

1) ADDING MINIMOTE AS A SECONDARY CONTROLLER
===================================
In Vera, go to Devices, Z-Wave Devices.  Bring the laptop and Minimote near Vera, and then press the LEARN button on the MiniMote – The blue LED will blink slowly.

-Press the button labeled “ADD Z-WAVE CONTROLLER” in VERA - The blue and
red LEDs will blink quickly on the MiniMote to indicate detection of the other Z-Wave controller.

- The blue LED will stay solid for 2 seconds to indicate success; the red LED will stay
solid for 2 seconds to indicate failure.  You'll see the Z-wave activity in Vera and it will say CONFIGURING.  In a few minutes you should see the new SCENE CONTROLLER device in Vera.  Assign it a room and name it MiniMote

2) Creating Scenes/Adding Devices to the MiniMote buttons:
===========================================
Creating Scenes (and Removing Z-Wave Devices from Scenes)
1. Press and hold the scene button you wish to configure (top of enclosure) – The blue
LED will blink quickly after 1 second to show that it is ready to add/remove a device
from the scene.
2. Press the Z-Wave button on the product you wish add/remove (while still holding
the scene button from the previous step) - The blue LED on the Minimote will stay
solid to indicate the device has entered the scene.*
3. While still holding the scene button from Step-1, adjust the level of the
Lamp/Shade/product to the desired level.
4. Release the scene button to complete adding the device to the scene at the device’s
current level.
5. You can add several devices to a scene button, just walk to each device and add it into
the same scene button as you did with the first device.

* Note: If the product is already a part of that particular scene, it will be removed from
that scene the second time steps #1-4 are repeated for that particular product in that
scene.
Note: Z-Wave devices must be first added/included into the same network as the
Minimote in order to create a scene with that device.

WHY THE MINIMOTE?
===============
It's a super small scene controller, keep one in the car to turn on the porch lights, it fits in my coin tray in my jeep.
I also use one in the kitchen, used a double sided tape to stick it to the wall and I can now turn on and off all lights, or just the scenes I setup in the MiniMote to turn on just the kitchen lights, etc.

Lets hope MCV works with Aeon Labs to get the MiniMote working so we can trigger event in vera based on the scene button pushed.  I tried 0,1,2,3,4 and had no luck with this method.  I have other GE remotes/controllers that work just fine with this, just not the minimote :(

Let me add my thanks. myhomeserver, this was tremendously helpful. My experience wasn't without a few glitches, however. Both my minimotes were recognized by Vera just fine, and that hadn't been a problem before. Using your instructions, some devices added in just fine and worked immediately. Others only worked after numerous deletes and re-adds. It was a bit tricky to get the switched load on my Leviton 4 scene controller, but I finally found that holding the mini's button, then holding buttons 2 and 4 on the scene controller ( to put the switched load in program mode) then pushing the number one button on the scene controller added it to the mini successfully. In fact, I had all but given up on adding one particular Leviton wall dimmer switch, but I tried it again today (must have been the tenth time) and it worked right off the bat. I have no idea why it worked this time and not yesterday or the day before. I charged both minis and they seem to be working consistently for now.

I, too, would like the minis to be able to activate Vera scenes, but for now I'm happy to have them working directly with devices. Thanks again.

FYI, for those interested in adding MiniMote to work with Scenes in Vera, I contacted Aeon Labs and CC'd MCV management

here is what I got from Aeon Labs Management below, and they CC'd MCV management on the reply.  I don't think this will help us end users, ,but lets hope MCV adds in full support for MiniMote due to this.

FROM AEON LABS:
==============

Our Minimote has the ability to send any and all command classes available in Z-Wave or execute any scene using the "Association Command Configuration Command Class".  Please find the attached engineering specification to do this as well as an in depth example below.

The following commands should work with your Minimote in order to have it send Basic Set 1 when button 1 is pressed, Basic Set 2 when button 2 is pressed and so on to your gateway.  These can be sent to any node ID from the minimote.

FORMAT OF DATA:
1) Setting Button #1 to send Basic Set 1
ZW_SendData(Configuration CC, Configuration Set, 241, 1, 1); - Changes the function on Button #1 to being Z-Wave programmable.
ZW_SendData(Association Command Configuration CC, Command Config Set, 0, nodeID to receive transmission, 3, Basic CC, Basic Set, 1); - A tap on Button #1 will send Basic Set 1 to the NodeID.

EXAMPLES:
1) Setting Button #1 to send Basic Set 11 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 241, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 0, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 11);

2) Setting Button #2 to send Basic Set 22 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 242, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 40, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 22);

3) Setting Button #3 to send Basic Set 33 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 243, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 80, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 33);

4) Setting Button #4 to send Basic Set 44 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 244, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 120, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 44);

5) Setting Button #5 to send Basic Set 55 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 245, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 160, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 55);

6) Setting Button #6 to send Basic Set 66 to NodeID 77.
ZW_SendData(0x70, 0x04, 246, 1, 1);
ZW_SendData(0x9B, 0x03, 240, 77, 3, 0x20, 0x01, 66);

Bump.  I recently bought a Vera and minimote and would really like to see these devices work together.  I'm using UI2 + Vera 2.

I'm being stupid here but is it possible to get the Minimote controlling individual devices through Vera as well as Scenes?

Mine still won't control scenes, but I do have it as a secondary controller and it's working fine with my Vera on UI4 Beta
Title: Re: How do I add Minimote?
Post by: markd on June 23, 2010, 01:09:08 pm
I'm new to this so please can you tell me what is meant by 'secondary controller'.  I thought that Vera would 'see' the Minimote (which it does) and that I would be able to add devices to the buttons via Vera?  Is this what you mean?  Or are you working with the minimote directly controlling the devices without using Vera?

Many thanks for you help

Title: Re: How do I add Minimote?

It would be amusing to try something like:

    luup.call_action("urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:ZWaveNetwork1","SendData",{Node="70", Data="..."}, 1)

and work out what combination of the "Data" parameter resulted in the "right" ZWave messages going out over the wire (enable that level of logging in Vera's /etc/cmh/cmh.conf and watch the logs)

I'm sure with some experimentation, the above commands could be "sent out" via a Plugin, if someone had the time to experiment....

Bump.  Sry for bringing up an old topic but uhh... I have been wanting to grab an Aeon Labs Minimote myself.

Does anyone know with the Z Wave Firmware 3.2 and the Vera Beta Firmware 1.1.1245 if the issue with getting Vera's scenes to be triggered using this sleek little device has been resolved or not?

I am having a hard time deciding between the Aeon Labs Minimote or the Intermatic HA09C.  I really like how small and nice looking the Minimote is, however functionality is key.

How difficult is this?  I would have hoped this would have been given more attention much earlier on, as well.  Especially with the large boom of Vera sales in the last year, you'd think that things like this could be taken care of.  The Mini Mote and the GE Battery Scene controller need the better integration into Vera and accurate How To's on the wiki.  Those of us who have wasted money on these are falling through the loop holes in the compatibility guarantee.

I am not sure what Aeon Labs' role in this is, like maybe MCV and Aeon had a falling out and now we get the short end of the stick.

I don't understand how Aeon Labs expects to sell anything of theirs if it isn't A. available anywhere to buy and B. not compatible or working in Vera or other systems?

Why are scene controllers a complete Cluster F__K in Vera, regardless of manufacturer?

Spoke with my contacts at Aeon Labs since I'm testing the new Multi-sensor they have.  They told me that they have sent a new minimote firmware to MIOS for testing with Vera and scenes, so I hope to get this in my hands in the next few days and give it a whirl.  I just need to hear back from Aaron and get started....cross your fingers!

unless I missed something the minimote can not trigger scenes in Vera, it can, however,  be directly programmed to control lights or groups of lights, this is anhother piece of hardware awaiting a firmware update from aeon labs (where have I heard that before? sigh)

The 1.17 update does not appear to exist, as the prev poster points out 1.11 is the lastest version avail. I'm not sure if it's a typo in the wiki or if they are holding 1.17 for ransom somewhere  :P  In either case just retested mine and its no go for vera scenes, some have refered to "running scenes" with minimote meaning direct programing several devices, it works fine for that
Title: Re: How do I add Minimote?

So just that we talk about the same thing: My target is to run scenes which exist on the vera with the minimote.

I decided to still try the wiki again:

MANAGEMENT SUMMARY: No Success.

1. Downloaded (http://www.aeon-labs.com/site/products/view/3/) and upgraded the MiniMote to 1.11
2. I reset the MiniMote as described in the Wiki (http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Aeon_MiniMote)
3. I then added the MiniMote to the Vera by using "Add%Remove Devices=>ZWAVE Device=>Battery operated handheld remotes (Secondary)"

The MiniMote is actually "recognized" and added with the device name "_MiniMote". In the device settings in the "Scenes" tab everything is deactivated. See Screenshot1. So I can not configure the buttons as described in the Wiki.

I also tried defining the buttons as events in the scenes they should run (Screenshot2). If Buttons are defined like this they even show up in the device _Minimote (Screenshot3).

But after all, Vera shows no reaction at all to Buttons pushed on MiniMote.  :'(

I tried using the log while restarting lua http://10.0.0.X/cgi-bin/cmh/log.sh?Device=LuaUPnP and I can only find the lines:

Did anyone else try recently? Can somebody help interpreting the log? Does anyone have an idea how we could figure out if anything is sent from the MiniMote to the Vera?

I think the 1.17 version gave us all false hope :(

I just got a personal eMail from Aeon Labs pointing out that the new firmware 1.17 has  been released:
http://www.aeon-labs.com/site/products/view/3/

They asked me to share in the forum, but they did not specifically mention that it works with Vera now. Still, my question which they answered was about the Vera.

I Updated the MiniMote, then readed it as a secondary controller. I also added it according to the wiki (adding it as a normal zwave device). Window where I should be able to add still disabled (see above posts) => NO LUCK SO FAR.

EDIT: The Log now says that when restarting lua:
Code: [Select]

Can anyone help to interpret? Maybe somebody else tried with success?

Just found this:
http://en.z-wave.me/content/aeonlabs-miniremote-configuration
http://www.pepper1.net/zwavedb/device/27

How could we send those configurations using Vera? Any Idea?

The Device Options tab is where you can set up Configuration settings and Associations. Although this is the stuff Vera (presumably) does under the hood, given the very fresh wiki page (by @micasaverde) that seems to indicate this now works. Looking at your log snippet, it could be that Vera is somehow unsuccessful in configuring/setting up the remote with these settings.

Maybe we should wait for the UI5 which is supposed to be released within a few days. I guess this is a new firmware and therefore it could be that the update brings a proper implementation of that device too?

I think it should be possible now. We just have to wait for one of the zwave super gurus to help us out :)

We should offfer a MiniMote as a gift to one of those guru's and hope he'll go crazy about it not working and then solving the problem  ;D

Also no luck whatsoever on (supposedly) 1.17 Minimote firmware, MiOS firmware 1.1.1245.  The VersionInfo field never gets any text, and Capabilities only sometimes shows "18,150,0,1,1,1,B,|112,114,133,134,155,".

If someone who has actually got this to work could post screenshots of their Advanced tab, I could see if it's a case of Vera Can't Configure Minimote, or if it's more fundamental.

Well the remote is not working with vera, but in my case the version info and the capabilities are always shown, doesn't depend if I add it as a normal zwave device or as a secondary controller. The device name is also set to "_MiniMote" automatically when device is added. See attached screen shots of my advanced tab.

I'm imagining that the custom configuration info would need to look something like this, but I can't get close to the point where the thing will configure.  It always ends at "Failed at: Purging Associations".

It seems that holding the Learn button down puts the Minimote in "wakeup" mode.  This might be necessary but it isn't sufficient.

chixxi, thanks for your screen caps; I agree that yours doesn't look complete either.

BTW, I asked the uberguru yesterday to comment on what environment leads to a working MiniMote per the wiki; nothing yet.

Aeon Labs just provided the following Information to me:

...as a secondary controller to the network, you are sending out Scene Activation Command Class Value 1-8 depending on button pressed and if it was tapped or held.  i hope this helps.

So I guess we need to get the Vera to understand these commands, but I have no clue how to achieve that.

Nice! 8)

In the absence of a response from MCV as to what configuration was used to write the wiki page, I've updated it to reflect users' findings.

wow Great news! i have a vera2 and running UI4. I am reluctant to upgrade since I have read issues with plugins. Is there any ways this could work with UI4? (anyways i tried the http://cp.mios.com/firmware to upgrade to UI5 and it could not find my machine) Any suggestions?

Try to disable password on Vera 2, then it will find your machine.
